Body Mass Index PDF Author: Linda A. Ferrera
Publisher: Nova Publishers
ISBN: 9781594542824
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
The Federal guidelines on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults have defined 'overweight' as a body mass index value between 25 and 29.9; and 'obesity' as a body mass index value greater than or equal to 30. BMI is a ratio between weight and height. It is a mathematical formula that correlates with body fat, used to evaluate if a person is at an unhealthy weight (given a certain height). BMI value is more useful for predicting health risks than the weight alone (for adults ages 18 and up). Individuals with high BMI's are at increased risk of developing certain diseases, including: Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease, Dyslipidemia, Adult-Onset Diabetes (Type II), Sleep Apnea, Osteoarthritis, Female Infertility, and other Conditions, including: idiopathic intracranial hypertension lower extremity venous stasis disease, gastroesophageal reflux and urinary stress incontinence. This new book gathers research from around the world in the critical field of obesity research and its effects.

A Life Course Approach to Mental Disorders

A Life Course Approach to Mental Disorders PDF Author: Karestan C. Koenen
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191631167
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 473

Book Description
A Life Course Approach to Mental Disorders examines the interplay of social and biological factors in the production of a wide range of mental disorders throughout life, from the peri-natal period through to old age. The aging into adulthood of numerous birth cohorts, especially over the past twenty years, has provided increasing evidence that mental disorders previously perceived to emerge in adulthood may have their origins early in life. This book brings together, in a single resource, the research in life course epidemiology of mental disorders, forging a consensus on the current science and pointing the way forward for the field. Assembling researchers across disparate disciplines including epidemiology, developmental psychopathology, psychiatric genetics, sociology, developmental cognitive neuroscience, and epigenetics the book reviews the methods and synthesizes existing knowledge about the life course epidemiology of mental disorders in populations. It also presents discussions of the mechanisms that drive the production of mental disorders over the life course including emerging areas of research in the field. A Life Course Approach to Mental Disorders brings together the state-of-the-art science of life course epidemiology to inform training, research, practice and policy with regard to mental disorders. The first comprehensive articulation of a life course perspective in the area, it will be a key resource for academics, researchers and students.

Social Justice in Physical Education

Social Justice in Physical Education PDF Author: Daniel B. Robinson
Publisher: Canadian Scholars’ Press
ISBN: 1551308940
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
The physical education classroom can be a site of discomfort for young people who occupy marginalized identities, and a place where the normative beliefs and teaching practices of educators can act as a barrier to their inclusion. This timely edited collection challenges pre-service and in-service teachers to examine the pedagogical practices and assumptions that work to exclude students with intersecting and diverse identities from full participation in physical and health education. The contributors to this volume—who consist of both experienced and emerging scholars from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand—approach their topics from a range of social justice perspectives and interpretations. Covering a variety of areas including (dis)ability, gender, sexuality, race, social class, and religion, Social Justice in Physical Education promotes a broader understanding of the sociocultural, political, and institutional practices and assumptions that underlie current physical education teaching. Each chapter encourages the creation of more culturally relevant and inclusive pedagogy, policy, and practice, and the discussion questions invite readers to engage in critical reflection. Mapping a better way forward for physical and health education, this text will be an invaluable resource for courses on social justice, diversity, inclusive education, and physical education pedagogy.
