Book Description
Excerpt from Froebel's Letters on the Kindergarten Friedrich Froebel expressed his desire to his wife that his letters should be collected and published after his death, to which end he himself carefully preserved several of his last letters. His widow, Madame Luise Froebel, has conscientiously executed his wish. In response to an appeal which she made to those friends of Froebel who were known to have letters of the educational philosopher in their possession, she received a large amount of his correspondence. Madame Froebel (who lives in Hamburg) has made most careful copies of all these letters; and thus, at last, a fairly comprehensive collection of Froebel's Letters is in existence. I was requested by Madame Froebel, as a service I might render to the cause so dear to us, carefully to examine the letters and to prepare them for the press, with some accompanying words of my own. As a disciple of the Thuringian educationist, who had the good fortune thrice, during 1850 and 1851, to study with Froebel in his house at Marienthal, near the Liebenstein Spa, who am bound to the highest gratitude towards this ever dear fatherly friend, and who therefore would not willingly omit any opportunity to manifest my love and reverence for the master, I have accepted the request of Madame Froebel. Book Description
Excerpt from Froebel Letters: Edited With Explanatory Notes and Additional Matter And this Froebel enthusiasm is not transient. If you doubt its persistence, look at Frau Luise Froebel, the widow of the Kindergartener. Upwards of forty years have passed since her husband was taken away from her, yet the ardor of her enthusiasm has not cooled in the least. She continues as she was when walking by his side, a living piece of his own self, in whose soul we can recognize and study the soul of. Friedrich F rochel. I have no hesitation in saying that Frau Luise Froe bel is the spiritual creature of Friedrich Froebel. He made her what she is: he implanted in her those remarkable principles and traits of. Character that distinguish her and elevate her above the common crowd. There is in her a depth of perception, a wealth of sentiment, a loving and never withhold ing, never weakening sympathy for all that is good and elevating, - chiefly for such things as concern the development of the good and beautiful in man, such as we know to have characterized Froebel him self. For all which constitutes the real life and genius of Frau Froebel, she is indebted to his teaching and his influence. His genius pervades her as the creative spirit giving life to her soul. Book Description
Excerpt from Kindergarten and Child Culture Papers: Papers on Froebel's Kindergarten, With Suggestions on Principles and Methods of Child Culture in Different Countries In regard to my remarks on the letter to Krause, I will here confess to the votaries of Friederich Froebel that I do not con sider it right that the shady side of this remarkable, indeed this great man, should be carefully covered up by his friends. I think we should honor the truth here as elsewhere, and that by such uprightness we injure neither the man, who could as little be an angel in human form as other men, nor his cause, which will stand, so far as it has emanated from God, the source of all truth. We are much more likely to obtain a favorable judgment from all thought and quietly investigating men, who are not inclined or accustomed to throw away the true metal with the schlag, by such considerate uprightness. Ou this ground I shall never fear to speak freely of the human imperfections of a man who has done and brought into use so much good. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ... FROEBEL'S GIFTS THOUGHTS ON THE GIFTS OP FROEBEL "A Coebect comprehension of external, material things is a preliminary to a just comprehension of intellectual relations." Fbiedbich Froebel. "The A, B, C of things must precede the A, B, C of words, and give to the words (abstractions) their true foundations. It is because these foundations fail so often in the present time that there are so few men who think independently and express skillfully their inborn divine ideas." Friedbich Froebel. "Perception is the beginning and the preliminary condition for thinking. One's own perceptions awaken one's own conceptions, and these awaken one's own thinking in later stages of development. Let us have no precocity, but natural, that is consecutive, development." Fbiedbich Froebei, . "Every child brings with him into the world the natural disposition to see correctly what is before him, or, in other words, the truth. If things are shown to him in their connection, his soul perceives them thus as a conception. But if, as often happens, things are brought before his mind singly, or piecemeal, and in fragments, then the natural disposition to see correctly is perverted to the opposite, and the healthy mind is perplexed." Friedrich Froebbl. "The linking together which is everywhere seen, and which holds the Universe in its wholeness and unity, the eye receives, and thereby receives the representation, but without understanding it except as an impression and an image. But these first impressions are the root-fibres for the understanding that is developed later." Friedrich Froebel. "The correct perception is a preparation for correct knowing and thinking." Friedrich Froebel. "No new subject of instruction should come to the scholar, of which he does not...

Book Description
Excerpt from Story of Friedrich Froebel He also showed him the papa and mam ma and the little baby flowers, and how most of these flower families lived in beauti ful homes which men call blossoms. Friedrich, you may be sure, was delighted to know all this; and also to feel that he could be of use to the plants in his father's garden. From this time forth he spent many happy hours in the fresh air and sunshine, working in the garden, and, watching the beautiful flowers unfold. Year after year Friedrich grew taller and stronger until he was old enough to be sent away to school, when a dear old uncle, who was very kind to him, took him to his home. There he lived a number of happy years, studying hard and learning much which was helpful to him in after life.
