Friction and Wear of Steels in Air and Vacuum

Friction and Wear of Steels in Air and Vacuum PDF Author: Roamer Predmore
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Friction
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
Metal alloys were tested for sliding friction and wear characteristics in vacuum and in air. One purpose was the analysis of variations in the coefficient of friction with changes in air pressure, hardness, and type of alloy. Another purpose was the evolution of a scheme for description of wear patterns. With a Bowden-Tabor apparatus, sliders of various alloys were revolved in contact with a steel plate. Soft and hard steel, titanium, aluminum, copper, and copper-beryllium alloys were tested. Hardness of steel in the plate was varied. Visual and metallographic inspection, as well as study of microhardness traverses from below the wear interface, provided the results. Photomicrographs showing wear in the metal alloys are presented. This paper also provides graphical description of variations in the coefficient of friction. A description of observed wear patterns is accomplished by a scheme of four categories: prow formation, severe rider wear, intermediate rider wear, and mild rider wear. In each category, wear pattern is correlated with a mechanism responsible for its formation.

Wear Particles: From the Cradle to the Grave

Wear Particles: From the Cradle to the Grave PDF Author: D. Dowson
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080875858
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 575

Book Description
The Leeds-Lyon symposia have well established themselves in the tribological calendar. Industrial progress requires a better understanding of interfacial phenomena than now exists and it is exciting to see that the topics addressed in these proceedings volumes are at the forefront of progress in tribological research. These proceedings contain 61 papers written by authors from all over the world, covering the entire spectrum of wear particles. Of particular interest is the detailed consideration of a wide range of particle formations and detachments, as well as a close look at the physics and chemistry of the wear of mechanisms, together with other in-depth state-of-the-art analytical contributions.

Mechanics and Physics of Precise Vacuum Mechanisms

Mechanics and Physics of Precise Vacuum Mechanisms PDF Author: E. A. Deulin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048125200
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
In this book the Russian expertise in the field of the design of precise vacuum mechanics is summarized. A wide range of physical applications of mechanism design in electronic, optical-electronic, chemical, and aerospace industries is presented in a comprehensible way. Topics treated include the method of microparticles flow regulation and its determination in vacuum equipment and mechanisms of electronics; precise mechanisms of nanoscale precision based on magnetic and electric rheology; precise harmonic rotary and not-coaxial nut-screw linear motion vacuum feedthroughs with technical parameters considered the best in the world; elastically deformed vacuum motion feedthroughs without friction couples usage; the computer system of vacuum mechanisms failure predicting. This English edition incorporates a number of features which should improve its usefulness as a textbook without changing the basic organization or the general philosophy of presentation of the subject matter of the original Russian work. Experience at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University and other schools shows that the book will be useful to engineering students who wish to prepare for more advanced studies and applications of vacuum science, technology and its applications.

Friction, Wear, Lubrication

Friction, Wear, Lubrication PDF Author: Kenneth C Ludema
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781439821893
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
The result of Kenneth C Ludema's 35 years of teaching and research, Friction, Wear, Lubrication: A Textbook in Tribology presents a broad view of the many aspects of tribology. All major aspects of this discipline are included, from mechanical to materials to chemical to mechanics. Ludema's key research areas - marginally lubricated wear and friction - will be of special interest to readers who would like to find reliable and useful data on friction and wear rates. Written primarily as a text/reference, this informative volume describes how to solve design problems in friction and wear. By applying close and informed observation of presently operating tribological systems, along with careful design of simulative tests, readers can develop their own conclusions of tribological results. This book is intended to bring everyone solving problems in friction and wear to the same understanding of what is (and what is not) involved in this exciting field. Seniors and graduate students, as well as practicing engineers employed in a wide range of industries will find this book to be an essential and practical resource.
