Profit... At What Cost?

Profit... At What Cost? PDF Author: Bob Goemans
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1646280873
Category : Young Adult Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
If you were fortunate enough to view the movie Erin Brockovich, then reading Profit...at What Cost? will bring back memories of environmental wrongdoings. Those who read the first outline of this novel said it should be made into a movie, as it's even more riveting and eye-opening! Are you paying attention, Hollywood? Follow an environmental reporter and her sidekick photographer as they search for the truth in two highly emotional yet mysterious environmental situations: above-normal births of deformed children in a small town in West Virginia and what finally leads to the death of thousands when an unknown bacterium is unleashed in the Midwest. And since the author actually wrote the terms and conditions, awarded and oversaw the progress of a similar contract, as described herein for the cleansing of contaminated soils at a USAF facility (one that could have unleashed an unknown bacterium into the wild), only its termination after its first test results became known, may have saved the earth from similar disastrous events, as described in this novel! DO NOT MISS READING THIS NOVEL!

Squid as Experimental Animals

Squid as Experimental Animals PDF Author: W.J., Jr. Adelman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489924892
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 531

Book Description
The predecessor to this book was A Guide to the Laboratory Use of the Squid Loligo pealei published by the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1974. The revision of this long out of date guide, with the approval of the Marine Biological Laboratory, is an attempt to introduce students and researchers to the cephalopods and particularly the squid as an object of biological research. Therefore, we have decided to expand on its original theme, which was to present important practical aspects for using the squid as experimental animals. There are twenty two chapters instead of the original eight. The material in the original eight chapters has been completely revised. Since more than one method can be used for accomplishing a given task, some duplication of methods was considered desirable in the various chapters. Thus, the methodology can be chosen which is best suited for each reader's requirements. Each subject also contains a mini-review which can serve as an introduction to the various topics. Thus, the volume is not just a laboratory manual, but can also be used as an introduction to squid biology. The book is intended for laboratory technicians, advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, researchers, and all others who want to learn the purpose, methods, and techniques of using squid as experimental animals. This is the reason why the name has been changed to its present title. Preceding the chapters is a list of many of the abbreviations, prefixes, and suffixes used in this volume.

Hazards associated with animal feed

Hazards associated with animal feed PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 925131909X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
The need for feed for terrestrial and aquatic animals continues to rise with the increasing demand for foods of animal origin; however, the challenge is not only to meet the growing need for feed but also to ensure its safety and thus contributing to the safety of the entire food chain. Feed safety incorporates the impact on human as well as animal health and welfare, which, in turn, can affect productivity. Hazards in feed may be inherent to feed ingredients as well as introduced during feed production, processing, handling, storage, transportation, and use. Hazards in feed may also result from accidental or deliberate human intervention. The expert meeting reviewed and discussed potential hazards in feed of chemical, biological and physical origin. It addressed hazards, as well as their occurrence in feed are described, and transfer from feed to food, relevance for food safety, impact on animal health, and emerging issues and trends. In addition, specific consideration was given to feed and products of feed production technologies of increasing relevance, for instance insects, former food and food processing by-products, biofuels (bioethanol and biodiesel) by-products, aquatic plants and marine resources.

The Inclusion of Environmental Education in Science Teacher Education

The Inclusion of Environmental Education in Science Teacher Education PDF Author: Alec Bodzin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048192226
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 379

Book Description
In the coming decades, the general public will be required ever more often to understand complex environmental issues, evaluate proposed environmental plans, and understand how individual decisions affect the environment at local to global scales. Thus it is of fundamental importance to ensure that higher quality education about these ecological issues raises the environmental literacy of the general public. In order to achieve this, teachers need to be trained as well as classroom practice enhanced. This volume focuses on the integration of environmental education into science teacher education. The book begins by providing readers with foundational knowledge of environmental education as it applies to the discipline of science education. It relates the historical and philosophical underpinnings of EE, as well as current trends in the subject that relate to science teacher education. Later chapters examine the pedagogical practices of environmental education in the context of science teacher education. Case studies of environmental education teaching and learning strategies in science teacher education, and instructional practices in K-12 science classrooms, are included. This book shares knowledge and ideas about environmental education pedagogy and serves as a reliable guide for both science teacher educators and K-12 science educators who wish to insert environmental education into science teacher education. Coverage includes everything from the methods employed in summer camps to the use of podcasting as a pedagogical aid. Studies have shown that schools that do manage to incorporate EE into their teaching programs demonstrate significant growth in student achievement as well as improved student behavior. This text argues that the multidisciplinary nature of environmental education itself requires problem-solving, critical thinking and literacy skills that benefit students’ work right across the curriculum.
