Fred's Dilemma PDF Author: Terry Devlin
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1465381996
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 163

Book Description
Terry Devlin has been a Management Consultant in Christchurch, New Zealand since moving from England in 1973. After his wife, Joan, died in 1999, Terry took up a new dimension with teaching English to overseas students mainly from South Korea, Japan and China. He successfully completed a TESOL Course in 2001 and this complemented tertiary studies in English Language and Literature from Canterbury University where he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree. Prior to that he was qualified and experienced in teaching management subjects and obtained a City and Guilds Teaching Diploma in England. The reason for taking up ESOL was that, while taking homestay students for many years, he realised that one essential skill missing from most language schools’ curricula was the ability to use the English language effectively. Strong on grammar but limited on usefulness! The English Conversation Centre started in 2000 and concentrated on Pronunciation, Reading, Speaking, Listening and Understanding. In looking for suitable material it was soon clear this was not available in the right form so Terry began creating his own exercises and writing his own stories for use in the classes. These range from Beginner, through Intermediate and to Advanced level and over all age groups. Callum and Oliver Devlin (right) are two of Terry’s three grandsons and they have done the illustrations for the books. The twins have shown an aptitude for the arts and this shines out from the excellent drawings.

Fred Hoyle PDF Author: Simon Mitton
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 113949595X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
The scientific life of Fred Hoyle (1915–2001) was truly unparalleled. During his career he wrote groundbreaking scientific papers and caused bitter disputes in the scientific community with his revolutionary theories. Hoyle is best known for showing that we are all, literally, made of stardust in his paper explaining how carbon, and then all the heavier elements, were created by nuclear reactions inside stars. However, he constantly courted controversy and two years later he followed this with his 'steady state' theory of the universe. This challenged another model of the universe, which Hoyle called the 'big bang' theory. Fred Hoyle was also famous amongst the general public. He popularised his research through radio and television broadcasts and wrote best-selling novels. Written from personal accounts and interviews with Hoyle's contemporaries, this book gives valuable personal insights into Fred Hoyle and his unforgettable life.

Fred's Ozark Legacy

Fred's Ozark Legacy PDF Author: Rosa Largent
Publisher: Covenant Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1645594718
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
Little Freddie was born out of wedlock to his teenage mother, Jenny Rakes, and his proud father, Jonathan Baker, who lived on the Ozark farm next to the Rakes. The desertion of his teen mother prior to his first birthday gave Freddie a family of only his maternal grandmother and his proud dad, Jonathan. At the death of his loving Grandmother Rakes, all that was left the preteen could call a "loving family" was his dad, Johnathan Baker. So as you can imagine his dad's shock when son, Fred, refused any schooling past the eighth grade, adding "ignorance" to the "out of wedlock" description of his son, Fred. His mother and her husband arrived prior to the end of Fred's teen years to visit with him and inform him he had three half brothers and a half sister since they had married. His refusal to say more than hello and not even see the "family" set the tone to his mother's life as it related to Fred. Before Fred finished his teen years, the family of his brother and sister, escorted by their half-sister, Penny, arrived unannounced and uninvited on his doorstep. His shock included his first question, to himself, What can I do for them? Of course, he had sympathy for them when he learned of the accidental death of their mother and father. His remaining teen years made it necessary for him to find a better paying job in the Ozarks and caused his life to be everything from horrible to misery. The way this transforms the children's relationship with Fred Baker and Penny Halloran, their half-sister, is an exciting and educational exhibit of the flying teen years. The arrival of the finishing touches to the family includes "fake" parents, nieces, nephews, grandparents, and all of 'em, as one says in the Ozarks. The close chase by a panther after their little sister, Sue Ann, reminds one just how dangerous even a ten year old can be. The teen boys needed little help going from the problem of working students to a wonderful loving Christian family.

Some Styles of Masculinity

Some Styles of Masculinity PDF Author: Gregg Bordowitz
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780997852455
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
An intimate, urgent and riotous account of masculinity, whiteness, queerness and belief in America In winter 2018, Gregg Bordowitz performed a three-part lecture series at the New Museum as part of Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon. Each evening, he explored an avatar of masculinity that was formative to him as he came of age as an outer-borough child of Jewish immigrants, then as an artist-activist in Manhattan at the dawn of the AIDS crisis: the rock star, the rabbi and the comedian. He merged personal and political history, ribald humor and social criticism, performer and persona. Some Styles of Masculinity is a self-portrait and an essay on upheaval and plague, based on transcripts of the eponymous series, which Bordowitz has reimagined for the page. He asserts that gender can't be separated from ethnicity, sexuality, class or nationality, and he connects these aspects of himself through personal anecdotes as well as reflections on whiteness, diaspora, comedy and Jewish mysticism. Some Styles of Masculinity evokes David Antin's "talk poems," Maggie Nelson's "autotheory," David France's How to Survive a Plague and Wayne Koestenbaum's casually erudite criticism. This book is a winding, intimate, urgent, freewheeling account of thinking and enduring in difficult times. Gregg Bordowitz (born 1964) is the author of Glenn Ligon: Untitled (I Am a Man) (2018), General Idea: Imagevirus (Afterall Books, 2010) and The AIDS Crisis Is Ridiculous and Other Writings, 1986-2003 (2004). He was an early participant in ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), where he cofounded several video collectives.

Nourishment

Nourishment PDF Author: Fred Provenza
Publisher: Chelsea Green Publishing
ISBN: 1603588027
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
Reflections on feeding body and spirit in a world of change Animal scientists have long considered domestic livestock to be too dumb to know how to eat right, but the lifetime research of animal behaviorist Fred Provenza and his colleagues has debunked this myth. Their work shows that when given a choice of natural foods, livestock have an astoundingly refined palate, nibbling through the day on as many as fifty kinds of grasses, forbs, and shrubs to meet their nutritional needs with remarkable precision. In Nourishment Provenza presents his thesis of the wisdom body, a wisdom that links flavor-feedback relationships at a cellular level with biochemically rich foods to meet the body's nutritional and medicinal needs. Provenza explores the fascinating complexity of these relationships as he raises and answers thought-provoking questions about what we can learn from animals about nutritional wisdom. What kinds of memories form the basis for how herbivores, and humans, recognize foods? Can a body develop nutritional and medicinal memories in utero and early in life? Do humans still possess the wisdom to select nourishing diets? Or, has that ability been hijacked by nutritional "authorities"? Consumers eager for a "quick fix" have empowered the multibillion-dollar-a-year supplement industry, but is taking supplements and enriching and fortifying foods helping us, or is it hurting us? On a broader scale Provenza explores the relationships among facets of complex, poorly understood, ever-changing ecological, social, and economic systems in light of an unpredictable future. To what degree do we lose contact with life-sustaining energies when the foods we eat come from anywhere but where we live? To what degree do we lose the mythological relationship that links us physically and spiritually with Mother Earth who nurtures our lives? Provenza's paradigm-changing exploration of these questions has implications that could vastly improve our health through a simple change in the way we view our relationships with the plants and animals we eat. Our health could be improved by eating biochemically rich foods and by creating cultures that know how to combine foods into meals that nourish and satiate. Provenza contends the voices of "authority" disconnect most people from a personal search to discover the inner wisdom that can nourish body and spirit. That journey means embracing wonder and uncertainty and avoiding illusions of stability and control as we dine on a planet in a universe bent on consuming itself.
