Excerpt from Fourteenth Biennial Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, State of Montana, 1916 In presenting this report I have included only those items which will be of general interest to persons desiring to learn about the educational affairs of this state. A great many interesting and worth-while tables could be compiled from the financial and Statistical reports of the counties, but these reports came to the office too late to permit of any analysis. We barely have time to make the summary and get the reports to the printer by January first, a month after the date required by law. Sometimes we are prone to criticise and become impa tient of results, but when we consider that Montana, as a state. Is only twenty-five years old, and when we compare our achievements with those of states much older than ours, we find abundant reason for felicitation on our part. In passing judgment upon Montana educationally we must remember that it is probably growing more rapidly than any other state in the union and this makes an extra strain upon our resources and our ingenuity in order to meet the demands for new schools. In 1910 the federal cen sus gave us a population of and the school census that year was The school population this year, 1916, is If we assume that the same ratio exist ing between the school population and the general population in 1910 has been maintained, then our present population is an increase of more than 73 per cent in six pears.
