Lincoln at Gettysburg

Lincoln at Gettysburg PDF Author: Garry Wills
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439126453
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
The power of words has rarely been given a more compelling demonstration than in the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln was asked to memorialize the gruesome battle. Instead, he gave the whole nation "a new birth of freedom" in the space of a mere 272 words. His entire life and previous training, and his deep political experience went into this, his revolutionary masterpiece. By examining both the address and Lincoln in their historical moment and cultural frame, Wills breathes new life into words we thought we knew, and reveals much about a president so mythologized but often misunderstood. Wills shows how Lincoln came to change the world and to effect an intellectual revolution, how his words had to and did complete the work of the guns, and how Lincoln wove a spell that has not yet been broken.

Writing the Gettysburg Address

Writing the Gettysburg Address PDF Author: Martin P. Johnson
Publisher: University Press of Kansas
ISBN: 0700621121
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Four score and seven years ago . . . . Are any six words better known, of greater import, or from a more crucial moment in our nation’s history? And yet after 150 years the dramatic and surprising story of how Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address has never been fully told. Until now. Martin Johnson's remarkable work of historical and literary detection illuminates a speech, a man, and a moment in history that we thought we knew. Johnson guides readers on Lincoln’s emotional and intellectual journey to the speaker’s platform, revealing that Lincoln himself experienced writing the Gettysburg Address as an eventful process that was filled with the possibility of failure, but which he knew resulted finally in success beyond expectation. We listen as Lincoln talks with the cemetery designer about the ideals and aspirations behind the unprecedented cemetery project, look over Lincoln's shoulder as he rethinks and rewrites his speech on the very morning of the ceremony, and share his anxiety that he might not live up to the occasion. And then, at last, we stand with Lincoln at Gettysburg, when he created the words and image of an enduring and authentic legend. Writing the Gettysburg Address resolves the puzzles and problems that have shrouded the composition of Lincoln's most admired speech in mystery for fifteen decades. Johnson shows when Lincoln first started his speech, reveals the state of the document Lincoln brought to Gettysburg, traces the origin of the false story that Lincoln wrote his speech on the train, identifies the manuscript Lincoln held while speaking, and presents a new method for deciding what Lincoln’s audience actually heard him say. Ultimately, Johnson shows that the Gettysburg Address was a speech that grew and changed with each step of Lincoln's eventful journey to the podium. His two-minute speech made the battlefield and the cemetery into landmarks of the American imagination, but it was Lincoln’s own journey to Gettysburg that made the Gettysburg Address.

Book Description
I was in the plumbing and heating wholesale business for twenty-five years before going into the ministry at age thirty-seven. I was always a very positive person, and when I went into the ministry, I was shocked and deeply disturbed by how people talked about sickness and disease and death. The longer I was in the ministry, the more I became aware of the great gulf there was between Gods people and God in this whole area. I began to see clearly from the Bible what Gods Will was for his people. I began to preach and teach about healing and life. I began to minister healing to my people. I would lay hands on the sick and anoint with oil. I began to ask God to heal people. It was in the Bible, and Jesus did it, and He told us to do it, so I did it. Several people were healed and converted and delivered from Satan. Lives were changed by God, and I got more and more excited. But not everyone got excited. In fact, I ran into much resistance. I found that most Christians just did not believe in the Bible. They didnt believe God would heal them, and they certainly didnt believe in long life. Everyone believed that God took them or He taught people a lesson through sickness or accidents or death. So I found that I had to resign from the denomination in which I was a pastor. So I started a church in Fort Lauderdale, and I have continued to be strong in my faith concerning healing and long life. So over the years, with all the experiences Ive had and with the negative resistance that I have run up against, I have gathered much information and decided to write a book. I emphasize how negative and unbelieving we are and how we have developed such deep ruts in our thinking. How we blame God. How we base everything on the wrong standard. How our everyday language is a language of death. How we have so much doubt in God. It has made me so concerned. Only by the love of God flowing through me have I been able to keep my faith and continue to practice what I preach. I know it is Gods Will that I help others to see the truth. The truth is Jesus. The truth is Gods Word. We know Jesus was the revelation of God, what God was like. He was a healer, the greatest healer of all time. The Bible is Gods Word, and it tells us that God wants us well. It also tells us who the enemy is. Satan is the taker, and God is the giver. Live 120 Years in Good Health is full of Bible quotes revealing these truths and tells us how to overcome our doubts and weaknesses. Watch what we say, Possess your vessel, Establish your priority, The choice is yours, The importance of love, Standing firm, etc. This book has many Bible quotations. Thats because the Bible is Gods Word, containing His promises, His instructions, His will, His direction, etc. From the Bible, we learn Gods way. But we must DO it. We must be doers of the Word, not just hearers or readers (James 1:2225). The way to healing, health, and long life is Gods way. He is the giver of lifeHis life! My vision is that God will use this book to inform and inspire people to seek His Kingdom first and to discover the truth of not just healing, but long life120 years in good health. There is so much sickness and death and sorrow and tragedy. We need a change of direction. We need Gods Way. We need Jesus, the healer. We need help. As you read this book, I pray that you see the truth and find the way. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I pray you find Jesus and live a healthy, happy, holy life with Him. One last thing, Jesus is coming soon. According to 2 Peter 3:12, we can hasten the day of the coming of the Lord. I believe we will hasten that day by being healthy and living long lives as a witness to the love and power of God. Jesus is coming for a glorious church (Ephesians 5:27). I invite you to accept this challenge and LIVE FOR 120 YEARS IN GOOD HEALTH to the glory of God. The Vision of the Author - Web site

Untying the Mystery: The Day of the Lord

Untying the Mystery: The Day of the Lord PDF Author: Shane Carter
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1098083806
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 77

Book Description
We are about to take a journey that will lead us to a revelation that is the underlining theme of the Word of God, the very manifestation of his glory. This revelation is one of the most misunderstood phenomena in the scripture. It relates the most glorious event to ever unfold on planet Earth, the Day of the Lord. What is the Day of the Lord, you ask? Untying this mystery with its vast implications is the task at hand. There are many speculations and opinions formed that have not arrived at the core of this truth. Most ideas point to a time when God releases all his fury against this world during the final seventieth week of Daniel's chapter 9 prophecy. Although God's wrath is just and no doubt will be expressed during the Day of the Lord, is this what this day is all about or is there much more? Before we begin, we should understand this foundational truth to life and its meaning-God is good. This does not mean he is one type of good or that there is more than one kind of goodness. God is the source and authority of all good. It is who he is. In Matthew 19:17, Jesus said, "There is none good but one, that is, God." Since God is the only source of good, only he can understand, judge, and administer good. When Moses asked for God's name and he responded, "I am that I am." He dropped a bombshell. Everything good that was, is, and will be is "I am." Not only did he create everything physical (solids, liquids, and gases) and spiritual (our thoughts, dreams, goals, strengths, and all other things), he also causes them to exist because he is the "I am." He is not "I have." To increase our understanding, we should know that God is three distinctive personalities that function as one Lord. God is the Lord's corporate name. The best way to conceptualize this is to consider who we are in his image. We are composed of spirit, soul, and body that function as one. Our bodies have many members: a head, arms, legs, eyes, ears, etc. They have their different functions but move together as one. The Triune God is invisible to us since our earthly eyes cannot behold his greatness. We cannot behold the sun without protection, and God is greater than the sun. So how can we relate to each other? He chose to accomplish this through his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is one of the three distinctive personalities. Jesus is God's glory, his light, the exact image of his person, and the expression of his heart.
