Book Description
As its subtitle puts it, Foundations of English grammar is intended for university students and advanced learners. Thus it positions itself between grammars for the general public, which must shy away from calling on linguistic concepts, and major scholarly descriptions of English, which are definitely beyond the grasp of someone without previous linguistic knowledge. Foundations does not presuppose that: it explains all the linguistic concepts it uses. But since it is primarily intended for university students, these concepts are fairly sophisticated, and they come from a wide range of linguistic schools. Foundations is neither a contrastive grammar (systematically comparing English with Dutch) nor a normative one (though it will signal disputed usages that are current). It is a descriptive grammar of modern, living English, concentrating on British English, with brief discussions of important American English features. In this sixth edition, eight chapters have been revised, some very extensively: roughly, those on the noun phrase, on verbal complementation, and on the complex sentence.New grammatical concepts have been introduced and others have been defined more sharply, most obviously in chapter zero, which explains the basic framework, but elsewhere as well. When possible, explanations have been simplified, when necessary, they have been made more precise. Recent changes in the English language have been accounted for, in grammar as well as in usage. A noticeable change in all revised chapters is that the examples, many of which had to be made up in the pre-computer age, are now all real-life examples, culled mainly from the world-wide web. Though conceived first and foremost as a textbook, Foundations has always been and remains eminently serviceable as a reference grammar, thanks to its detailed tables of contents (each chapter has its own), its extensive index and its many cross references.

Thinking English Grammar

Thinking English Grammar PDF Author: Xavier Dekeyser
Publisher: Peeters Publishers
ISBN: 9789042907638
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 542

Book Description
Thinking English Grammar. To Honour Xavier Dekeyser, Professor Emeritus contains papers by 34 colleagues of professor Dekeyser on subjects that have interested him throughout his career. His research has mainly been devoted to the history of English, and it is only natural that the first and longest section should consist of 11 papers on variation in English, both diachronic and synchronic. The second, barely shorter with its 9 papers, is devoted to the description of various aspects of modern English; some of these papers shade off into theoretical linguistics. Professor Dekeyser having obtained his Ph.D. on grammaticography, there is a third section on "Grammar from the Past", with 5 papers. The final section, 9 papers on "Language Teaching and Contrast", honours the eminent teacher of literally thousands of budding anglicists.

English Traditional Grammars

English Traditional Grammars PDF Author: Gerhard Leitner
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027245495
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 403

Book Description
Until recently grammars of English have received surprisingly little scholarly attention, while a lot of research is done on dictionaries. It appears, however, that learners of English shy away from modern grammars and prefer to consult dictionaries or traditional reference grammars instead. This raises questions as to the relationship between theoretical linguistics and grammar writing and calls for more research into this area, especially for the period from 1800 onwards, which was crucial for the development of grammatical thinking and its acceptance (or rejection) at all educational levels today. This volume brings together work from international experts on the historiography of English grammar writing who deal with a variety of topics grouped into three overlapping sections: I. Native Grammars of English, II. Non-native Grammars of English, and III. Grammatical Analyses. The volume includes summaries of the articles and a name index.
