Peter Strickland

Peter Strickland PDF Author: Stephen H. Grant
Publisher: New Academia Publishing/ The Spring
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
This is the first biography of Capt. Peter Strickland, a little-known Connecticut Yankee who crossed the Atlantic 100 times in command of a sailing vessel, traded with French and Portuguese colonies during the period 1864-1905, and served as the first American consul to French West Africa for over 20 years. We know about Peter Strickland's long life (1837-1921) because he wrote a daily journal from the age of 19 until the year he died. He broke away from a long line of Connecticut farmers to adopt a seafaring life at the age of 15. Capt. Strickland's merchant marine career led him from the east coast of the United States to the west coast of Africa. He introduced American tobacco and wood products into French and Portuguese colonies and on the return trips carried animal hides and peanuts in his 100-ton schooners. He wrote and published a book on behalf of sailors. The most knowledgeable American in the African trade for 40 years, Strickland struggled to maintain an American competitive edge among the dominant commercial presence of French trading houses from Bordeaux and Marseilles. The U.S. State Department asked him to become the first consul in French West Africa, with residence in Senegal. The captain accepted the terms: he would receive no salary, but he could keep the port fees he collected and continue to practice his import-export business. Living on the former slave island of Gorée, Strickland battled epidemics of cholera and yellow fever. He suffered from malaria and catarrh. His 23-year-old son George accidentally drowned off the coast of Dakar, Senegal. Demoralized and ill, Strickland retired to Boston in 1905 and became a gentleman farmer. At age 77, he recopied his entire journal into bound volumes.

Point of View

Point of View PDF Author: Elisabeth Hasselbeck
Publisher: WaterBrook
ISBN: 0525652787
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Recognized from her roles on Survivor, The View, and Fox & Friends, best-selling author Elisabeth Hasselbeck presents a deeply intimate journey of faith, told through the important moments in her life. From designing shoes to surviving Survivor to not surviving The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck has learned more about standing up for her convictions in the public eye than she ever though she would when she applied for a reality TV show on a whim almost two decades ago. Through most of those years, Elisabeth strived as if she had to earn the approval of others and of God. But God was gently at work in her to show His point of view--His invitation for her to rest in the calling, rest in His Word, and rest fully in the truth of the gospel. Point of View is an intimate walk of faith, as she writes mom to mom, friend to friend, mother to daughter. From the divisive table at The View to national political platforms to the breakfast table, Elisabeth bares her heart about her failures, her triumphs, and her path of learning lessons the hard way.

Book Description
The Unity of Religious Ideals may lead you straight on the path to your ideal, discover for you the religion, in whatever form it may appear, waken in yourself the longing for the Light and the Goal, and thus you may find the Self, like a pearl hidden in the shell of your heart. In six parts the whole field of religion is covered from the point of view of the mystic, the philosophy of religion, the concept of God and the God-ideal, the spirit of guidance and the spiritual hierarchy; then various religions and messengers are discussed, followed by a presentation of some religious symbols and their explanation. Finally, the concept of the divine message is presented, followed by an exposition of the role of universal Sufism, and what contribution it can give to the development of the individual and of humanity at large. All Religions are essentially one: since there is only one God and one truth it cannot be otherwise, This is one of the principal tenets of Sufism and is one of the most important elements of Hazrat Inayat Khanês message

Kant and Contemporary Epistemology

Kant and Contemporary Epistemology PDF Author: P. Parrini
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940110834X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
From the mid-1960s, after the important works by J. Hintikka, S. Körner, W. Sellars and P.F. Strawson, there has been a marked revival of Kantian epistemological thought. Against this background, featuring fruitful exchange between historical research and theoretical prospects, the main point of the book is the discussion of Kantian theory of scientific knowledge from the perspective of present-day analytical philosophy and philosophy of empirical and mathematical sciences. The main topics are the problem of a priori knowledge in logic, mathematics and physics, the distinction between analytic and synthetic judgments, the constitution of physical objectivity and the questions of realism and truth, the Kantian conception of time, causal laws and induction, the relations between Kantian epistemological thought, relativity theory, quantum theory and some recent developments of philosophy of science. The book is addressed to research workers, specialists and scholars in the fields of epistemology, philosophy of science and history of philosophy.
