Book Description
Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 7 With reference to reforesting burns, one naturally concludes as follows: Where trees grew before and produced a stand of tim ber which was valuable enough to cut for lumber, they may be made to grow again and to produce even more valuable material. On the other hand, it may be well to note that where trees never grew, forest planting is often most eagerly sought by the public. Book Description
Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 6 The origin of the steam skidder, which in its various forms is the main topic here to be treated, may be found in the grant ing to Mr. Horace Butters, of Luding'ton, Michigan, of letters patent for the first steam skidder. This original type of ma chine was devised to get logs out of low, wet places, and the curious surface formations found in many of the glaciated re gions of the Lake States, known as pot holes. Mr. Butters wisely foresaw the wide field possible to cover with his invention. Soon he replaced the Manila rope originally used by wire rope, and numerous important changes were made in the construction of the machine. In a circular in 1886 the possibilities of the steam skidding methods were first presented to the public. Book Description
Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 1 Although there are a number of publications in the United States and Canada, wholly or in part devoted to the propagandism of forestry, there are at the present time none which are mainly or entirely devoted to the professional or technical interests of the subject. With the establishment, within the last four years, of two fully-equipped special schools of forestry, whose graduates have begun work in the field; with the rapid expansion of the field work of the Federal Forestry Bureau, and of other agencies in technical direction, professional foresters have multiplied, and the time for means of communication among those who are building up the science and art of forestry in the United States seems to have arrived. The Forestry Quarterly is intended to meet this need. Besides publishing original articles on subjects of interest to the profession, and translations of such articles from foreign sources, it is intended to bring reviews and references to the current literature, and also, in brief notes, the news of the forestry world, personal and otherwise, with a view of keeping the readers in touch with the development of their art in all its branches. While this journal, in its inception and management, is a child of the New York State College of Forestry, it is hoped that, as time passes on, its pages may be used by all or any workers in the field for the discussion of their problems and record of their experiences. Book Description
Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Forestry, Vol. 1 The Heathen - Although readers of a forestry journal usually know more about the weather than they wish, it is such a characteristic British institution that it would be unpatriotic not to mention it. So far as the North of England is concerned, the summer of 1906 has probably been one of the best for years. Sufficient heat and sufficient moisture, following a cold but not seriously frosty Spring, have produced a growth on all forest trees which we should imagine to be above the average; while newly planted trees which failed to grow had to excuse themselves on other ground than a dry season. In the South, more frosty and droughty conditions prevailed, and for once in a way this part of the country has been less favored than the North. However, it is probably safe to say that while better seasons may have been seen, there have also been a great many worse, and taking things all round, the forester has no serious cause for complaint against the weather of 1906.
