This report presents the results of a study devoted primarily to current forest practices and the international trade situation in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. It begins with some background information. It outlines the importance of the forest industry to Canada, reports on a number of campaigns to disparage Canada's forest products, and discusses jurisdictional responsibilities for forest resources management. Next, it describes a number of forest certification systems currently in place, describes trends pertaining to the criteria for credibility of these systems, and discusses the government role in forest management certification. It concludes with a discussion of the role of the federal government in the following aspects of forest management: research and development; monitoring forests and forestry practices; the International Forestry Partnership Program; international trade.
