Book Description
Excerpt from Foreign Secretaries of the XIX. Century, Vol. 3 In thanking my readers for their favour given to the last volume of this work, I contemplate their appreciation of my efforts with all the greater satisfaction that, on the whole, their judgment is upheld by the various critics who have deigned to employ their pens upon Foreign Secretaries of the Nineteenth Century, Volume III. Some, it is true, have noticed the book as a whole, gracefully acknowledging that former silence was not due to intentional neglect, but to ignorance of an unknown writer's desire to collect facts faithfully and tell the truth without prejudice. If in some few instances this characteristic is questioned, the honest doubts of such writers are more than balanced by criticism of a favourable type, which, when proceeding from journals holding such different political opinions as the Daily News and Morning Post, I can scarcely fail to prize. In defence of Canning's action in the Baltic, he uplifted that eloquent voice which, repeating even balanced and logical periods, carried alike conviction to the mass, and genuine delight to the more refined amongst his hearers. Book Description
Excerpt from Foreign Secretaries of the XIX. Century to 1834, Vol. 1 The careers of our prominent public men must ever possess interest for Englishmen. The adoption or abandonment of a line of policy depends so entirely on the direction of individual minds, that in estimating the value of any given measure, the character and capacity of the statesman must be considered in connection with the political condition of his times. An attempt has been here made to combine short biographical notices of the Foreign Secretaries of the nineteenth century to 1834, with allusions to the salient subjects which engaged their attention. Without any desire to write a history of England during those exciting times, the writer nevertheless hopes to send his reader for further instruction to the pages of the painstaking authors to whom he is mostly indebted for the completion of his task. Category : Business & Economics

Book Description
'One of the most powerful books in the social sciences ever written. ... A must-read' Thomas Piketty 'The twentieth century's most prophetic critic of capitalism' Prospect Karl Polanyi's landmark 1944 work is one of the earliest and most powerful critiques of unregulated markets. Tracing the history of capitalism from the great transformation of the industrial revolution onwards, he shows that there has been nothing 'natural' about the market state. Instead of reducing human relations and our environment to mere commodities, the economy must always be embedded in civil society. Describing the 'avalanche of social dislocation' of his time, Polanyi's hugely influential work is a passionate call to protect our common humanity. 'Polanyi's vision for an alternative economy re-embedded in politics and social relations offers a refreshing alternative' Guardian 'Polanyi exposes the myth of the free market' Joseph Stiglitz With a new introduction by Gareth Dale
