Book Description
Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 14: December 1950 Evidence of the United States concern is reflected in Secretary of State Acheson's statement before the United Nations Assembly in September in which he emphasized the importance of land use and owner ship ih meeting the challenge of human misery, of hunger, poverty, and disease, and in which he lauded the beginnings or achievements in land reform already made by some countries. The Middle East is typical of an area in which land ownership patterns present national problems and challenges. Here most of the people are farmers who barely make a living from tilling fields that they do not own. The system is an inefficient one that brings forth the least from both man and soil. Some progress is being made toward more equable owner ship of land, but the patterns are deeply rooted in tradition and change comes slowly. That change must come, however, is becoming more 'and more appar ent to forward-looking leaders of the area. They know that a more efficient and productive agriculture is the foremost need of their nations, and some of them are beginning to recognize that only farmers who own or at least control their lands can be counted on to produce the most harvest.
