Inheriting the War: Poetry and Prose by Descendants of Vietnam Veterans and Refugees PDF Author: Laren McClung
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393354296
Category : Literary Collections

Pages : 548

Book Description
Descendants of Vietnam veterans and refugees confront the aftermath of war and, in verse and prose, deliver another kind of war story. Fifty years after the Vietnam War, this anthology by descendants of Vietnam veterans and refugees—American, Vietnamese, Vietnamese Diaspora, Hmong, Australian, and others—confronts war and its aftermath. What emerges is an affecting portrait of the effects of war and family—an intercultural, generational dialogue on silence, memory, landscape, imagination, Agent Orange, displacement, postwar trauma, and the severe realities that are carried home. Including such acclaimed voices as Viet Thanh Nguyen, Karen Russell, Terrance Hayes, Suzan-Lori Parks, Nick Flynn, and Ocean Vuong, Inheriting the War enriches the discourse of the Vietnam War and provides a collective conversation that attempts to transcend the recursion of history. “Each unique work in Inheriting the War embraces a collective that aims to engage through some daring and passionate truths calibrated by bravery.” —Yusef Komunyakaa, from the foreword

Jubilee House Prayers, Poems and Promises

Jubilee House Prayers, Poems and Promises PDF Author: Barbara Marshall

Book Description
Jubilee House Prayers, Poems, and Promises are inspirational words of hope for homeless and transitioning Women Veterans. Born out of a decade plus of offering spiritual support, transitional housing and timely assistance to Sister Veterans who have faced homelessness. The writers of the book are women veterans who have witnessed the power that women veterans possess to move forward in life. Barbara Summey Marshall is a a former Navy Chaplain, Womanist Thinker and Social Activist. Maya Valrissa Louise Marshall is US Army veteran who completed a combat tour of duty in Afghanistan. Maya is a Motivator. Both women are disabled veterans who are committed to helping women veterans finish strong. This book offers lessons on how to keep the faith and pursue your best life. Many women veterans have had to overcome the trauma of Military Sexual assault, harassment and unfavorable discharges. These experiences may hamper reintegration and restoration. For some the lack of recognition may even be a barrier. The clarion call from this book to women veterans is to turn lemons into lemonade. This book challenges women veterans to get back in formation and to make their dreams come true. Expect to be motivated and energized by these words of hope. Change for the better is a process, but the words in this book can give you a jump start. So read and enjoy these motivational messages. This book of poems and prayers are restorative and renewing. Moreover, this book is written to honor and acknowledge the service and sacrifice of women veterans, many of whom are also disabled and have faced the complex experiences of homelessness. The authors of this book began opening their family home to homeless women veterans in March 2005. In August 2010, the women veterans purchased a Department of Veterans Affairs Foreclosure in Fort Bragg/Fayetteville NC to help and to house homeless women veterans and their children. The house was called the Jubilee House named after the Levicticus 25 reference to the Year of Jubilee or the year of Refreshing. In January of 2011, the American Broadcasting Companies Inc. network reached out to the women veterans and offered renovate the 1300 square feet VA Foreclosure. After much consideration the family of veterans consented to have the ABC ExtremeHomeMakeover team rebuild the original Jubilee House. This seemed like the answer to prayers and hopes for honoring women veterans. ABC sought to honor the service and sacrifices of women veterans in a manner that was historical, unorthodox and avant garde. The American Broadcasting Companies Inc. acknowledged the presence of a population of veterans that has essentially been "invisible." The September 2011 episode announced to the world that women veterans are to be recognized for their service and sacrifice and are worthy of an ExtremeMakeover house renovated in their honor. The renovation brought many new challenges that had to deciphered. Nonetheless, Women Veterans are deserving of Prayers, Poems, and Promises. Over 3 Million have served since the beginning of history. Spiritual Support and prayers to all of our Sister Veterans who have courageously served.
