Book Description
A successful search was made for petroleum-base hydraulic fluids with rust-inhibiting qualities adequate to prevent rusting in submarine hydraulic systems contaminated with seawater. Fluids of two types were found with considerably greater rust-inhibiting ability than currently used Navy hydraulic fluids. The type of fluid giving the better rust inhibition deviated from present hydraulic fluid specification requirements in that it emulsified readily with contaminating seawater, whereas the second type did not. Other necessary properties of both fluid types were satisfactory. Feasibility of using the emulsifying-type fluid in submarine hydraulic systems was shown by 1000 hr of satisfactory operation using a hydraulic system mock-up with full scale submarine system components in the presence of 10% sea-water contamination. Technical specification requirements for this type fluid were drawn up.

Category : Fluid power technology
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
Fundamentals of hydraulics and pneumatics are presented in this manual, prepared for regular navy and naval reserve personnel who are seeking advancement to Petty Officer Third Class. The history of applications of compressed fluids is described in connection with physical principles. Selection of types of liquids and gases is discussed with a background of operating temperature ranges, contamination control techniques, lubrication aspects, and safety precautions. Components in closed- and open-center fluid systems are studied in efforts to familiarize circuit diagrams. Detailed descriptions are made for the functions of fluidlines, connectors, sealing devices, wipers, backup washers, containers, strainers, filters, accumulators, pumps, and compressors. Control and measurements of fluid flow and pressure are analyzed in terms of different types of flowmeters, pressure gages, and values; and methods of directing flow and converting power into mechanical force and motion, in terms of directional control valves, actuating cylinders, fluid motors, air turbines, and turbine governors. Also included are studies of fluidics, trouble shooting, hydraulic power drive, electrohydraulic steering, and missile and aircraft fluid power systems. Illustrations for explanation use and a glossary of general terms are included in the appendix.

Languages : en
Pages : 187

Book Description
Originally printed in 1946, The Fleet Type Submarine series of technical manuals remains unparalleled. Contained in its pages and those of the companion texts are descriptions of every operating component aboard a fleet boat. Hydraulic Systems, Navpers 16169, describes the system that powers the submarine¿s steering mechanism and diving planes. It is also a richly- illustrated textbook that discusses hydraulic forces and their methods of employment. It includes a detailed description of the operation, installation, and repair of various parts, and outlines common problems and remedies. Originally classified ¿Restricted¿, this book was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. Some illustrations have been slightly reformatted, and color plates are reproduced in black and white. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Fluid Power Dynamics

Fluid Power Dynamics PDF Author: R. Keith Mobley
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080506623
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
Fluid Power Dynamics is a 12-chapter book in two sections covering the basics of fluid power through hydraulic system components and troubleshooting. The second section covers pneumatics from basics through to troubleshooting. This is the latest book in a new series published by Butterworth-Heinemann in association with PLANT ENGINEERING magazine. PLANT ENGINEERING fills a unique information need for the men and women who operate and maintain industrial plants: It bridges the information gap between engineering education and practical application. As technology advances at increasingly faster rates, this information service is becoming more and more important. Since its first issue in 1947, PLANT ENGINEERING has stood as the leading problem-solving information source for America's industrial plant engineers, and this book series will effectively contribute to that resource and reputation.

Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluid for Submarine Use

Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluid for Submarine Use PDF Author: E. S. Blake
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 121

Book Description
Synthesis and evaluation data on five chemical classes as possible base stocks for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids for submarines are reported. The classes are: substituted polyaromatic ethers; halogenated amines; omega, omega'-bis (halophenyl) alkanes; sulfones; and phosphoruscontaining compounds. They were evaluated for fire-resistance (as measured by autoignition temperature, 1300 F. molten metal test, flash-and fire points), thermal stability, fluid properties (including viscosity and fluid range), compatibility with alkyd base paints, O-ring Sealants and electrical conduit sheathing.
