Coherence Studies of Geomagnetic Fluctuations in the Frequency Range .05 to 10 Hz
Author: Joseph Timothy Fisher
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Physics
Languages : en
Pages : 171
Book Description
Fluctuations in the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field were measrued at a land site (La Mesa) and on the floor of Monterey Bay at a depth of 70 meters. The measurements span a 19-hour period (August 17/18, 1982). Assuming a circular polarization basis set, analysis was conducted to determine the coherence between the two sites in the frequency range .05-10 Hz. Preliminary analysis indicates a high degree of coherence from .05-.4 Hz. Also, a study of the polarization of the micropulsation field at each site was conducted in terms of Stokes parameters. (Author).

Low Frequency Geomagnetic Fluctuations (.04 to 25 Hz) on Land and on the Floor of Monterey Bay

Book Description
A coil antenna consisting of approximately 6000 turns of copper wire was used to measure the horizontal component of fluctuations of the earth's magnetic field on the floor of Monterey Bay in water depth of approximately 50 meters. The results indicate that the power spectral density of the fluctuations varies from 10(nT)-sq/Hz at 0.04 Hz to 0.000001(nT)-sq/Hz at 25 Hz, a monotonic decrease of about 6 dB/octave, except in the 8-20 Hz region where the Schuman resonances occur. While the sensitivity of the equipment was insufficient to measure the vertical component of the fluctuation we can put an upper limit of 0.001(nT)-sq/Hz at 1 Hz and 0.000001(nT)-sq/Hz) at 10 Hz on the magnitude of this component. The same sensor was also used to measure various components of the field fluctuations at a remote land site (Chew's Ridge). In the frequency range observed the general shape of the spectra was similar to those obtained at sea. However, a strong azimuthal variation at certain frequencies was noted in the land data. The possibility that these directional signals are of man made origin cannot be excluded at this time. (Author).

Coherence Study of Geomagnetic Fluctuations in Frequency Range .04-0.6 HZ Between Remote Land Sites
Author: Stephen John Anthony

Pages : 144
Book Description
Fluctuations in the geomagnetic field were measured by three orthogonally mounted coil sensors at two land sites separated by 40 km. Computer generated voltage vs time and magnetic field vs time plots failed to reveal the presence of dominant micropulsations. A coherence study between the two sites revealed coherence values of 0.6 - 0.8 in the frequency range 0.4 - 0.6 Hz. This is compared to a coherence study completed at the Naval Air Development Center, Warminster, Pennsylvania, between land sites 24.8 km apart. The NADC coherence values are lower (0.3 - 0.6).
