Sessile droplets are widely found in day to day life: it might be a coffee spilt, rain onto a waterproof raincoat or again, water falling onto a cooking plate. However, despite the vast number of studies devoted to droplets for almost half a century, the fundamental phenomenon of the evaporation of sessile droplets is still a field that attracts a high level of interest due to its wide applicability and the development of new visualisation techniques or new types of complex fluids. This experimental study is focused two distinct aspects:- The evaporation of pure fluids has allow to study hydrothermal waves that appear in the droplets of volatile fluids during phase change. The influence of the type of fluid --different alcohols and alkanes-- and the gravity levels --Terrestrial, Lunar and Martian-- is investigated to have a better understanding of the flow motion inside droplet. Moreover, the use of different gravity levels allows to experimentally evidence the contribution of the atmospheric convective transport to sessile droplet evaporation. This investigation has allowed to develop an empirical model to take account of natural convection which greatly increases the evaporation rate in the quasi-steady diffusion-controlled evaporation model.- If complex fluids exhibit an evaporation dynamic similar to pure fluid, other mechanisms come into play, such as gelation, particles organisation and cracks formation. Wetting and different functional groups on the particles graphs will be studied in relation to the final pattern of cracks.

Dynamics of a sessile droplet in channel flow is studied numerically. The numerical model uses one set of the governing equations combined with a volume tracking method on a fixed structured mesh to model the simultaneous movement of mass and momentum across cell boundaries. Surface tension is modeled as a body force acting on the fluid near the free surface. Two dimensional sessile droplet deformation and channel flow structures are discussed for both pinned and unpinned droplets. The effects of having a fixed contact line on the deformation and breakup of a droplet are investigated. A characteristic length is defined to compare droplet deformation due to changes in the surface tension, viscosity and density ratios. Among theses parameters, the surface tension is found to be the most important one in determining the mobility of the droplets. A breakup criterion is obtained in terms of droplet Reynolds and Capillary numbers. Next, dynamics of two spaced sessile droplets in a channel flow is investigated. Displacements of binary droplets in a channel flow are compared by studying changes in the location of the leading and trailing edges for each droplet at different droplet spacing. Deformation and displacement of leading and tailing droplets with the ones for a single droplet are presented. The thesis concludes with application of the model to study displacement of a three-dimensional droplet. Dynamics of channel flow at the presence of water droplet was investigated considering the effects of Reynolds Number, Capillary number, Bond number, droplet size, and the contact angle. Displacement was characterized based on the changes of the droplet height and the contact wetted area.

The transi tion from the concept of short-range effects that reigned earlier to the concept of long-range forces simultaneously signified the transition from a two-dimensional world to a three-dimensional one, incomparably richer in physicochemical phenomena. In this chapter, we consider the motion of a droplet and the surrounding flow accompanied by the motion. Our specific attention is on the spontaneous and autonomous motion of a droplet. Such a system has no applied external force and no asymmetry imposed a priori. Nevertheless, the droplet moves by consuming energy and by breaking the symmetry of the system. The phenomenon reminds us of biological systems that can also move spontaneously. These systems, which are called self-propulsive systems, have recently been extensively studied after several model experiments were proposed using chemical reactions. The mechanism of such motion is less clear, though theoretical and computational studies have revealed several novel aspects of the motion in contrast with the motion under a given asymmetry. We discuss recently developed experimental systems. Then, we focus on a suspended droplet that swims, and explain how the result can be analyzed in terms of hydrodynamics by using the concept of surface tension. Finally, we apply the method to the analysis of a swimming suspended droplet induced propelled by a chemical pattern generated inside the droplet.
