Book Description
To improve the understanding of the significance of flocculation in the fluvial environment, suspended particle characteristics of Oakville Sixteen-Mile Creek were studied to develop a non-destructive, direct observation method for determining floc characteristics such as equivalent spherical diameter, surface area, perimeter, and circularity; to determine the extent to which flocculation is present in the freshwater fluvial system; to determine the stability of flocs; and to establish the advantages and disadvantages of the sampling and analytical method. The method used involved collecting a water sample into a settling chamber where the suspended solids settle under gravity onto an inverted microscope slide. The slide is then placed on an inverted microscope and photographs of the flocs are taken through the microscope. The transparencies are rear- projected onto a translucent digitizer to obtain digital output.

Flocculation of Suspended Fine-grained Sediment in Rivers
Author: I. G. Droppo
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Flocculation
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Fine-grained sediment flocculation is a phenomenon which is not fully understood in the freshwater fluvial environment. This study examined the suspended sediment characteristics of a southern Ontario river in order to determine the nature of flocculated suspended sediment and the factors which may influence it. It is the first research to quantify flocculation as the primary mode of transport for fine-grained mineral sediment in a river. As flocculation is known to alter the settling characteristics of particles, and potentially their ability to transport contaminants, there are important practical environmental consequences for flocculation in rivers.

Flocculation of Fine-grained Suspended Solids in Southern Ontario Rivers

Book Description
The phenomenon of fine-grained sediment flocculation is well recognized in the marine and estuarine environments but flocculation in freshwater fluvial systems requires further examination. Because flocculation is known to affect sediment settling velocities, this phenomenon has important environmental implications from a sediment and contaminant transport perspective. The suspended sediment characteristics of Oakville Sixteen-Mile Creek in southern Ontario were examined using a new digitizing method developed for the study. The study examined whether flocculation was present in the freshwater fluvial system; how stable the flocs within the realms of the sampling and analytical method were; and whether flocculation was influenced by temporal and spatial trends for the independent variables of temperature, pH, conductivity, suspended solid concentrations, discharge (turbulence), bacterial densities associated with suspended solids, particulate organic carbon, and major ions.

Microstructure of Fine-Grained Sediments
Author: W.A. Chiou
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461244285
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 570
Book Description
Knowledge of basic clay microstructure is fundamental to an understanding of the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of fine-grained sediments and rocks. This compilation of fifty-nine peer-reviewed papers examines clay microstructure in detail with comprehensive sections focusing on microstructure signatures, environmental processes, modeling, measurement techniques, and future research recommendations. Many of these topics are discussed in light of geological and engineering applications, such as hazardous waste disposal, construction techniques, and drilling programs. The field of clay microstructure is developing rapidly. The concepts, observations, and principles presented in this book will help stimulate new thought and be a "spring board" for exciting new research.

Flocculation in Natural and Engineered Environmental Systems
Author: Steven N. Liss
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0203485335
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 464
Book Description
While new developments in genomics, nanotechnology, sampling, and modelling permit increasingly revealing investigation into flocculation structure and processes, there is still a fundamental lack of knowledge related to many aspects of this phenomenon. Presented by a prominent team of international experts, this text takes a unique perspective and melds together the natural and engineering fields of science as they relate to this central phenomenon. In doing so, the authors present the full range of sampling, handling, analytical, and interpretive options for operational management of natural or engineered system, providing comprehensive coverage that meets the needs of researchers, practitioners and students.
