Book Description
Excerpt from Flashlights of Abraham Lincoln One day in the year 1855, there stood at the entrance to the Burnett House in Cincinnati, that old hostelry which was lately burned (1920), a long, lean, gaunt, sad-eyed man of about forty-five. His clothes were ill fitting and he wore heavy boots. He was in that city as one of the counsel for the defendants in a case of patent infringements upon reaping machines. As this rather inelegant looking man, with all his native picturesqueness stood there, other counsel also employed in the defense came near; they looked the Hoosier over, passed him by without speaking, as unworthy of notice, and walked into the hotel. It would never do to have a man like that associated with them on this important case. What man was this, who, unresentful of his treatment, stayed through the trial of this case, and silently watched its progress? It was said afterward that the judge was as much influenced by his unspoken, but expressive sympathy and the play of his features, while he paced back and forth during the progress of the case, as by the argument of the other counsel, who ignored him. And who was this man? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: An Address Delivered Before the Men's League of the Broadway Tabernacle Church of New York, Feb; 10th, 1902 The story of this life is a thrice told tale, but it is one where age cannot wither or custom stale its infinite variety. This is the more true if the first impressions are the vivid ones of the dawn of boyhood. Which happened to be my own good fortune. It was fully forty years ago. The Sep tember stars had begun to twinkle that night upon the then western frontier town on the Wisconsin banks of the rolling Mississippi. The evening breezes, fragrant and cool from upland bluff and prairie stretch were wafting in with that soft and velvet touch so characteristic of those early days of the plateaus of the new Northwest. Soon they bore the sound of fife and drum and then the tread of marching feet. Along the street swung a line of a hundred men, the flag at their head, and each bore his torch and wore the glazed cap and cape. There was a halt at my father's gate. He joined them. And they swung away into the darkness, singing in mighty unison to their rhythmic tread one of the great songs of the north land. Lincoln, the Gift of Illinois to Mankind PDF Author: Alexander Sullivan

Book Description
Excerpt from Lincoln, the Gift of Illinois to Mankind: An Address HE subject I am to respond to is one of the easiest and one of the most difficult. It is easy because of the great abun dance and the great diversity of themes which flow from the mere mention of Lincoln's name. His life will be searched in vain for a day or an event barren of human interest. But the sentiment is a difficult one, because the many-sided qualifications of the man, the great depth and breadth of his knowledge and achievements, and the exceptional manner in which his life is intertwined with all the events of his own time and with the eternal prin ciples of justice and freedom, would make it impossible in a long address to do more than give a mere flashlight vision of his marvelous career.
