Mackenzie's Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts PDF Author: An American Physician
Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing
ISBN: 1449432018
Category : Cooking

Pages : 462

Book Description
Published in 1829 in Philadelphia, Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts was an unknown “American physician’s” adaptation of a best-selling British reference book by Colin Mackenzie. The book is an all-encompassing miscellanea of household information specifically revised from its original British publication for use in the United States. Covering everything from gardening, metallurgy, and pickling and preserving to watercolors, medical cures, perfumery, brewing, and cooking, this early 19th century compendium was an essential guide for cooking and managing a household during this time period. With the extensive material covered, the tome was very well received in America, as was the original publication in the United Kingdom. Even though the work was first published nearly 200 years ago, the recipes and advice have proven to be relevant today—lip balms citing the book as the recipe source can be found on the Internet, as well as numerous blogs referring to the brewing section of the book. While recipes such as Acorn Coffee, Clove Cordial, and Elephant’s Milk may only be of historical interest, Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts still has significance today beyond simple historical curiosity. This edition of Mackenzie’s Five Thousand Receipts in All the Useful and Domestic Arts was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.

Will he continue on with his previous life or try to convince the leaders of the world to follow the advice of the Centorians?

The Wingmen

The Wingmen PDF Author: Adam Lazarus
Publisher: Citadel Press
ISBN: 0806542527
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 259

Book Description
The untold story of the unique fifty-year friendship between two American icons: John Glenn, the unassailable pioneer of space exploration and Ted Williams, indisputably the greatest hitter in baseball history. It was 1953, the Korean War in full throttle, when two men—already experts in their fields—crossed the fabled 38th Parallel into Communist airspace aboard matching Panther jets. John Glenn was an ambitious operations officer with fifty-nine World War II combat missions under his belt. His wingman was Ted Williams, the two-time American League Triple Crown winner who, at the pinnacle of his career, was inexplicably recalled to active service in the United States Marine Corps. Together, the affable flier and the notoriously tempestuous left fielder soared into North Korea, creating a death-defying bond. Although, over the next half century, their contrasting lives were challenged by exhilarating highs and devastating lows, that bond would endure. Through unpublished letters, unit diaries, declassified military records, manuscripts, and new and illuminating interviews, The Wingmen reveals an epic and intimate portrait of two heroes—larger-than-life and yet ineffably human, ordinary men who accomplished the extraordinary. At its heart, this was a conflicted friendship that found commonality in mutual respect—throughout the perils of war, sports dominance, scientific innovation, cutthroat national politics, the burden of celebrity, and the meaning of bravery. Now, author Adam Lazaraus sheds light on a largely forgotten chapter in these legends’ lives—as singular individuals, inspiring patriots, and eventually, however improbable, profoundly close friends.

Case studies, personal accounts, and analysis show how to recognize and combat pseudoscience in our post-truth, fake news world. “ . . . an invaluable volume that examines the cognitive biases that lead to pseudoscience, the history of pseudoscience, and the reasons for its wide acceptance.” —Science-Based Medicine In a post-truth, fake news world, we are particularly susceptible to the claims of pseudoscience. When emotions and opinions are more widely disseminated than scientific findings, and self-proclaimed experts get their expertise from Google, how can the average person distinguish real science from fake? This book examines pseudoscience from a variety of perspectives. Covering health, agriculture, food science, infectious diseases, and more, contributors examine the: • Basics of pseudoscience, including issues of cognitive bias • Costs of pseudoscience, from naturopathy to logical fallacies of anti-vaccination • Perceptions of scientific soundness • Mainstream presence of “integrative medicine,” hypnosis, and parapsychology • Use of case studies and new media in science advocacy Through case studies, analysis, and personal accounts, this fascinating study shows how to recognize pseudoscience, why it is so widely accepted, and how to advocate for real science.
