Background: Higher risk factor prevalence and increased incidence of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome are commonly reported in law enforcement personnel compared to the general population. However, higher levels of physical fitness and activity in police officers are correlated with lower incidence of chronic pain and injuries, less absenteeism from work, and less medical care claims. Research Question: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a 12-week health education and promotion program would increase daily activity among law enforcement personnel. Methods: Eighteen law enforcement personnel took part in a 12-week health and wellness promotion program. Participants wore an activity tracker 2 weeks before, during, and 2 weeks after the health promotion program for data collection. Paired t- test were conducted to compare baseline to post-health promotion activity. Results: Before health promotion, mean activity was 9716 ± 4125 steps/day. Mean step count on non-working days (10182 ± 4970 steps) was significantly higher than working days post-health promotion (8650 ± 3862 steps, p=0.010). Mean very-active heart rate intensity minutes significantly increased by 8.41 ± 51.14 minutes after health promotion (p=0.024). Significance: The average daily activity heartrate intensity of participants surpassed physical activity guidelines suggesting physical inactivity may not be responsible for the increased cardiovascular risk in some law enforcement personnel. Physical activity in law enforcement can differ between work days and non-work days, and any health program in this population may need to take this into consideration.
