Excerpt from Ninth Biennial Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the State of Iowa, 1899-1900 I had also planned to investigate fully to what extent ordinary business pursuits are followed on the first day of the week, com mouly called Sunday. And which is described in the Code, section 5040, as Breach of Sabbath, but reasons given in the preceding paragraph prevented the inquiry in this case as well. The con ducting of business on Sunday is an injustice to the employes who are thus compelled to forego one day's rest each week, and a wrong to the business man who faithfully observes the Sabbath, giving him one day less of business each week than the man who transacts business seven days in the week. Excerpt from Thirteenth Report of the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the State of Iowa, for the Biennial Period 1906-1907 Up to date, 129 children under, 14 years of age have been dis missed from factories, workshops and stores through the efforts of inspectors; this does not include the many children who were dis missed by employers in a voluntary endeavor to comply with the requirements of the new law. To date, 60 cases of violation of child labor law have been brought into court, and in each case conviction has been secured excepting one case in which action was brought on statement of child, but parent afterward furnished satisfactory proof that child was over 14, and two others where parties escaped arrest, one through prolonged sickness, and the other by leaving the city and state.
