Book Description
Excerpt from Firing Regulations for Small Arms for the United States Army Firing Regulations for Small Arms this book was the authorized guide for small-arms practice until April, 1896, when, on account of the adoption of the new mag azine rifle, a small manual of firing regulations, pre pared by a board of officers consisting of Col. J C. Bates, Second Infantry; Lieut. Col. Charles A. Wikofl, Nineteenth Infantry; and Capt. Marion P. Maus, First Infantry, was published, for temporary use, by order of the Secretary of War. The progress of the Army in target practice since the publication of Captain Blunt's book, together with the change of arms to the present service magazine rifle, made a more complete revision of the Firing Regula tions for Small Arms necessary. Capt. John S. Mallory, Second Infantry, was therefore detailed in February, 1897, by the Major General Commanding the Army, with the approval of the Secretary of War, to make such a revision, and his work, with slight amendments, was approved by a board of officers consisting of Col. J. C. Bates, Second Infantry; Maj. A. R. Chaffee, Ninth Cavalry; First Lieut. R. C. Van Vliet, Tenth Infantry, with Capt John S. Mallory as recorder, and was pub lished in General Orders, No. 36, Adjutant General's Office, June 11, 1897. The revised work, with some minor changes, having received the approval of the Major General Commanding the Army and the Secre tary of War, is now published in this form for the in= formation and guidance of the Army.
