This book explores how feminist movements in the Nordic region challenge the increasing gender, race and class inequalities following the global economic crisis, neoliberal capitalism and austerity politics, and how they position themselves in the face of the rise of nationalism and right-wing populism. The book contextualizes these recent events in the long histories of racial and colonial power relations embedded in Nordic societies and their gender equality and welfare state regimes. It examines the role of whiteness and racism and seeks to decolonize feminist knowledge and genealogies of feminist movements in the region. The contributions provide in-depth knowledge on the different orientations, dilemmas and tactics that feminisms develop in these challenging times and show the centrality of antiracist and decolonizing critiques of feminisms. Hidden agendas and asymmetric information will thrive. The results are losses of resources plus disintegration for a large majority of enterprises and citizens. One may say that the demise of the old-fashioned Nordic model is embedded in the gullibility of its inmates. They look up to authorities and lack the needed oversight, agility, and sense of urgency to adapt and change. To rock the boat and reinvent the Nordic model is much needed. It can be attained by focusing on the real economy and the behaviour of its inmates.

First published in 1999, this volume is a study of regional and local co-operation across national borders in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and also of regional co-operation out of the area - across the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and in the Barents region. The focus of the study is on processes of region-building. Co-operation between regions across national borders is seen as a creative process, and as something that has to be nurtured and guided. The authors recognised the need for a work which examined issues crossing Nordic borders and made the information more publicly accessible, emerging within evolving discussions of regional governance, cross-border collaborations and Nordic co-operation. The editors have featured three forms of contributions: a series of regional case studies, collations of data on sub-national governments and relating these sub-national factors to debates on Nordic co-operation and European integration. Authors with specialist regional knowledge examine these processes in detail, through case studies which represent the most important of this type of Nordic area and provide a view of what may constitute 'success' in such ventures. The authors also discuss what such processes may signify for general Nordic co-operation against the backdrop of European integration and seek to indicate what Nordic regions may bring to European regionalism. The survey reveals first and foremost that young people’s understanding of the Scandinavian languages ​​varies greatly between the Nordic nations and between the languages. In several countries, large proportions do not consider it easy to understand one or more of the Scandinavian languages. The report also discusses what these results may mean for the integration between the Nordic countries and the Nordic identity.
