Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Tubular Joints

Book Description
In this study, important aspects of nonlinear behavior of tubular joints are numerically investigated with a finite element procedure including geometric and material nonlinearities. The numerical results give a clear and convincing physical interpretation of the effects of external loads on the ultimate static strength of tubular joints. The results include the stress redistribution within the joint at the ultimate state, the stiffness of the T-type joints at different load levels, the real failure modes of tubular joints under external loads and the assessment of the safety margins in the design process. The loading types applied to the joints include axial compression from the brace, axial tension, in-plane bending, combined loads of axial compression and in-plane bending. Based upon the numerical tests of a typical joints under six different combinations of in-plane bending and axial compression, the interaction equations in different design codes are verified. The safely margins hidden in these interaction equations are evaluated in two different ways. The first evaluation is based upon the "theoretical accurate" ultimate capacity of simple load $Psb{u}$ or $Msb{u}$. The second evaluation is based upon the predicted $bar Psb{u}$ or $bar Msb{u}$ values calculated with the current API design recommendation. It is the writer's hope that the research work in this study would help to bring about a comprehensive design criterion, which brings together available knowledge of theoretical results, physical understanding and laboratory research in a form suitable for practical design use.

Finite Element Analysis and Design of Metal Structures

Finite Element Analysis and Design of Metal Structures PDF Author: Ehab Ellobody
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0124165753
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Traditionally, engineers have used laboratory testing to investigate the behavior of metal structures and systems. These numerical models must be carefully developed, calibrated and validated against the available physical test results. They are commonly complex and very expensive. From concept to assembly, Finite Element Analysis and Design of Metal Structures provides civil and structural engineers with the concepts and procedures needed to build accurate numerical models without using expensive laboratory testing methods. Professionals and researchers will find Finite Element Analysis and Design of Metal Structures a valuable guide to finite elements in terms of its applications. - Presents design examples for metal tubular connections - Simplified review for general steps of finite element analysis - Commonly used linear and nonlinear analyses in finite element modeling - Realistic examples of concepts and procedures for Finite Element Analysis and Design

Design of Welded Tubular Connections

Design of Welded Tubular Connections PDF Author: P.W. Marshall
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483290905
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 425

Book Description
Although tubular structures are reasonably well understood by designers of offshore platforms, onshore applications often suffer from "learning curve" problems, particularly in the connections, tending to inhibit the wider use of tubes. This book was written primarily to help this situation. Representing 25 years of work by one of the pioneers in the field of tubular structures, the book covers research, synthesis of design criteria, and successful application to the practical design, construction, inspection, and lifetime monitoring of major structures. Written by the principal author of the AWS D1.1 Code Provisions for Tubular Structures this book is intended to be used in conjunction with the AWS Structural Welding Code - Steel, AWS D1.1-88 published by the American Welding Society, Miami, FL, USA. Users of this Code, writers of other codes, students and researchers alike will find it an indispensable source of background material in their work with tubular structures.

Finite Element Analysis of Stress Concentration in Tubular T-joints

Finite Element Analysis of Stress Concentration in Tubular T-joints PDF Author:

Pages : 129

Book Description
The report describes the analytical investigation of stressdistribution in tubular T-joint for axial and in-plane bendingload cases. The results of the study on distribution of surfacestresses along the brace-chord intersection, including through-thickness variation and hot spot stress concentration factors arepresented and compared with those reported in the literature. The effect of shallow weld toe cracks (both hair-line crack andcrack depth equal to half the chord wall thickness) on stressredistribution are discussed.
