We, the People of God

We, the People of God PDF Author: First Presbyterian Church
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265816455
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Excerpt from We, the People of God: Historical Update, 1959-1984, the First Presbyterian Church, High Point, North Carolina To understand a man, first you must know what he remembers, the ancient Chinese wisely said. The same could be said for a church; especially a church like First Presbyterian, with such a rich heritage. After all, it is people who gather regularly for worship and to share their lives together; it is people who erect buildings it is people who give of themselves and their means to bring Christ 5 love to a hurting world. Thus, if you would under stand the nature of this church, first you must seek to discover what its people remember. That is what this volume is all about: remembering those who have lived, and labored, and loved among us. It is remembering great men of God who have called us to become more than we were; it is remembering ministries we have shared with each other and the great city which surrounds us; it is remembering children who have grown up among us and taken their places of leadership in our church and city; it is remembering events and trends which have helped to shape our lives. Most of all, it is remembering the love of God which draws us all together. Paying tribute to special people is always a fulfilling experience, for it helps us connect with the greatness we have seen demonstrated. It is a little like standing upon the shoulders of giants who have gone before us so we may get a clearer view of what we are and at least a glimpse of what we are becoming. It has a way of inspiring us to pick up the torch from fallen hands and to give whatever it takes to carry it on. The interest and endeavors of many persons have contributed to the compilation of this history. Yet honoring special people is a hazardous pursuit, for there is a very deep sense in which each person who has lived and labored among us is special in his or her own way. Many books could not contain all their stories, so we must select the few which most adequately reflect the larger story of our life together. The complex task of selecting compels us to paint large Strokes with a broad brush. Overlooking anyone has not been our intention; yet we fear that in our humanness we have done just that. If someone you love has been accidentally omitted, please forgive us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
