A Theory of Domestic and International Trade Finance
Author: Mr.JaeBin Ahn
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1463924607
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 37
Book Description
This paper provides a theory model of trade finance to explain the "great trade collapse." The model shows that, first, the riskiness of international transactions rises relative to domestic transactions during economic downturns, and second, the exclusive use of a letter of credit in international transactions exacerbates a collapse in trade during a financial crisis. The basic model considers banks' optimal screening decisions in the presence of counterparty default risks. In equilibrium, banks will maintain a higher precision screening test for domestic firms and a lower precision screening test for foreign firms, which constitutes the main mechanism of the model.

Financing the U.S. Trade Deficit
Author: James K. Jackson
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437936989
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 19
Book Description
The U.S. merchandise trade deficit is a part of the overall U.S. balance of payments (BoP), a summary statement of all economic transactions between the residents of the U.S. and the rest of the world, during a given period of time. Some Members of Congress and others are concerned over the magnitude of the U.S. merchandise trade deficit and the associated increase in U.S. dollar-denominated assets owned by foreigners. This report provides an overview of the U.S. BoP, an explanation of the broader role of capital flows in the U.S. economy, an explanation of how the country finances its trade deficit or a trade surplus, and the implications for Congress and the country of the large inflows of capital from abroad. Charts and tables.
