Book Description
The performance of Prefabricated Erosion Prevention (P.E.P.) reefs is evaluated on the basis of the wave climate off West Palm Beach, Florida. This evaluation is also applicable to other areas if the physical scaling is employed properly. Model testing based upon the distorted Froudian similarity is performed in a wave tank at Florida Atlantic University. The P.E.P. reefs are able to reflect about 20% of wave energy during storms while they allow about 60% wave energy to shores (about 30% reflected and 10% dissipates) in normal seasons. Therefore, they will interrupt about 30-40% of littoral drift. It is a good device for the areas where littoral drift is relatively unimportant in the dynamic equilibrium of beach profile. Particularly, the P.E.P. reefs are very feasible for shore protection of waterways or canals again ship waves and wakes. Installation of P.E.P. reefs can only be made under supervision of an experienced coastal engineer who fully understands the coastal processes and oceanographic conditions in the area of interest.

Feasibility Study of PEP Reefs for Beach Erosion Control
Author: Newman K. Lin

Pages : 29
Book Description
This study was conceived and implemented to investigate the feasibility of artificial reefs for beach erosion control. The Prefabricated Erosion Prevention (PEP) reef, invented by Hans Rauch, was deployed in eight feet of water off the beach near Sloan's Curve, Palm Beach, Florida. Field investigations and numerical simulations were performed to study the impact of the reef on the coastal processes such as nearshore currents, beach profile evolution, etc.
