U.S. Amphibious Ships and Craft

U.S. Amphibious Ships and Craft PDF Author: Norman Friedman
Publisher: US Naval Institute Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 724

Book Description
In this latest addition to his acclaimed U.S. warship design history series, Norman Friedman describes the ships and the craft of the U.S. amphibious force, from its inception in the 1920s through World War II to the present. He explains how and why the United States successfully created an entirely new kind of fleet to fight and win such World War II battles as D-Day and the island landings in the Pacific. To an extent not previously documented, his book lays out the differing views and contributions of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marines as well as the British, and how they affected the development of prewar and wartime amphibious forces. Current and future amphibious forces and tactics are explained, together with their implications for ships and craft, from 40,000-ton amphibious carriers down to tracked amphibious vehicles. As in earlier volumes in the series, this study uses previously unpublished sources to illustrate not only what was actually built but what was planned and never brought into service. For example, the book offers the first comprehensive and fully illustrated account of abortive attempts in the 1960s and beyond to build new fire support ships (LFS). With nearly two hundred photographs and specially commissioned line drawings and extensive appendixes, the work conveniently brings together details of the ships and their service histories found elsewhere only in scattered official references.

Systems Analysis of Amphibious Landing Craft: Comparisons of Revised Designs of Advanced Landing Craft

Systems Analysis of Amphibious Landing Craft: Comparisons of Revised Designs of Advanced Landing Craft PDF Author: Andrew R. Grant

Languages : en
Pages : 108

Book Description
This report compares the relative performance of the revised designs for advanced landing craft as they existed at the end of the preliminary design phase of the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft program (S14-17X). The results were obtained largely through the use of detailed simulations of amphibious assault operations using various combinations of ships, helicopters, landing craft and operating modes in the mid-range time period (to 1985). The report points out the effects of advanced characteristics on the amphibious assault process, and compares several types of advanced craft with each other and with conventional craft. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made as to further development of advanced landing craft. In particular, the JEFF craft are recommended for further development.

Assault Landing Craft

Assault Landing Craft PDF Author: Brian Lavery
Publisher: Seaforth Publishing
ISBN: 1848320507
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 129

Book Description
The landing craft assault or LCA was one of the unsung heroes of the Second World War. It took part in practically every amphibious operation from Norway to Normandy and landed around 400,000 men in action conditions, plus many more in training. It was the only serviceable British landing craft at the beginning of the War, and it remained in service until the Suez operation of 1956. It landed the first waves of infantry on the British and Canadian beaches in Normandy in 1944, and Americans on the notorious Omaha Beach. Its far-sighted design of 1938 remains the basis for the landing craft of today. This is the first book devoted to this humble but essential craft. It examines its design history before the War, when amphibious operations were deeply unfashionable. It describes its design and construction with plans that will be useful to modellers and wargamers. It includes information on the role of the crew and the techniques and tactics used in landings. It gives an account of the larger ships which carried it and the life of the sailors and soldiers who travelled in it, with many vivid personal accounts. Finally, it describes its role in the many operations in which it took part, including withdrawals such as Dunkirk and the catastrophic Dieppe raid of 1942.

Book Description
The Navy¿s FY 2011-2015 shipbuilding plan calls for procuring an 11th and final San Antonio (LPD-17) class amphibious ship in FY 2012. The Navy estimates the procurement cost of this ship at $2 billion. The ship received $184 million in FY 2010 advance procurement funding, and the Navy plans to request the remaining $1.9 billion of the cost in the FY 2012 budget. Accordingly, the Navy¿s proposed FY 2011 budget does not request any procurement funding for the LPD-17 program. Contents of this report: (1) Intro.; (2) Amphibious Ships in General; LPD-17 Program; (3) Issues for Congress. Appendix A. Amphibious Lift Goal; Appendix B. LPD-17 Cost Growth and Construction Problems. Illus. This is a print on demand report.
