Book Description
Excerpt from Fighting a Fire This little volume, revised and brought thoroughly up-to-date, in text and pictures, is offered as a modest appreciation of the work of the New York firemen. The task of these men, though modified somewhat by improved appliances, remains just as heroic and picturesque as it did when the first edition of this book was issued in 1897. In fact, this original edition, in text, if not in pictures, could have stood as a fairly correct description of the physical workings of the New York Fire Department to-day, for though equipment and apparatus have changed considerably in the past few years, there has been no material change in the actual work of extinguishing fires. No better substitute than water as a medium for stopping fire has yet been discovered. New systems for supplying it in greater volume and devices for directing it more accurately at the heart of a fire have done much to aid the firefighter in his Avork; but his calling remains just as perilous and as full of dangerous uncertainties as it was twenty-five years ago. The general details, illustrations, and data have been accomplished through visits to about one hundred and twenty-five fire departments and through correspondence with over one hundred additional. A complete history of the advance of this great enterprise would require a bulky volume, yet an accurate condensation will be found herein. Fighting for Life

Fighting for Life PDF Author: S. Josephine Baker
Publisher: New York Review of Books
ISBN: 1590177061
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
An “engaging and . . . thought-provoking” memoir of battling public health crises in early 20th-century New York City—from the pioneering female physician and children’s health advocate who ‘caught’ Typhoid Mary (The New York Times) New York’s Lower East Side was said to be the most densely populated square mile on earth in the 1890s. Health inspectors called the neighborhood “the suicide ward.” Diarrhea epidemics raged each summer, killing thousands of children. Sweatshop babies with smallpox and typhus dozed in garment heaps destined for fashionable shops. Desperate mothers paced the streets to soothe their feverish children and white mourning cloths hung from every building. A third of the children living there died before their fifth birthday. By 1911, the child death rate had fallen sharply and The New York Times hailed the city as the healthiest on earth. In this witty and highly personal autobiography, public health crusader Dr. S. Josephine Baker explains how this transformation was achieved. By the time she retired in 1923, Baker was famous worldwide for saving the lives of 90,000 children. The programs she developed, many still in use today, have saved the lives of millions more. She fought for women’s suffrage, toured Russia in the 1930s, and captured “Typhoid” Mary Mallon, twice. She was also an astute observer of her times, and Fighting for Life is one of the most honest, compassionate memoirs of American medicine ever written.
