Book Description
Excerpt from Fifty-Eighth Annual Report of Receipts and Expenditures of the City of Laconia, New Hampshire, for Year Ending February 15, 1951: Together With Other Annual Reports and Papers Relating to the Affairs of the City Just about one year ago, we as a group undertook the administration of this City's government. I would like at this time to make a brief report to you of our municipal business, both of the past year and the year to come. Like every year, 1949 had its share of problems. Chief among these has been unemployment. Certain trends that were all too evident last March have been borne out. Unemployment has marched hand in hand with a sharp curtailment of industrial activity; a definite halt in the upward slant of assessed valuations has been accompanied by an in creasing number of unpaid tax bills, and the effect of this trend has been keenly felt by your City Government in its welfare costs and in its budget planning. Laconia has not been alone in finding itself in this predicament, all other New Hampshire cities have. To a lesser or greater extent, experienced the same trend of events. It may well be simply a period of post war readjustment, but at any rate it has been, and still is, the most serious problem that we have had to face. Its solution is extremely difficult and to a large extent is beyond the scope or field of a municipal government. But during this coming year we must do everything in our legal power to help relieve the situation. To this end I recommend to you the following suggestions or points for your guidance: We must be prepared to undertake necessary public construction and improvements that are too sizeable and too costly for the pay as you go plan. Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-Seventh Annual Report of the Receipts and Expenditures of the City of Laconia, New Hampshire, for the Year Ending February 15, 1920: Together With Other Annual Reports and Papers Relating to the Affairs of the City One of the greatest history making years the world has ever known has passed since the last inauguration and we in our 'quie't city can hardly realize the magnitude of it, but Laconia has not been idle and has responded nobly to every call to help carry on the war. She furnished 577 men and thirteen nurses out of which I am happy to say only two were killed in battle, one died from wounds and thirteen died from disease, and a committee from this body has in charge the procuring of a suitable memorial in memory of the dead and in honor of the living who risked their lives to make the world safe for democracy. In all of the Liberty Bond drives-she exceeded her quote by thousands and in all other drives went way over the top; the ladies are entitled to a share of the credit having done good work in all of the drives as well as making a vast amount of cloth ing, bandages, etc., that was called for by the Government. Book Description
Excerpt from 1900, Seventh Annual Report of the Receipts and Expenditures of the City of Laconia, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending February 15, 1900; Together With Other Annual Reports and Papers Relating to the Affairs of the City Gentlemen of the City Council: In accordance with the custom which has been observed for some years, I matte it my first official duty to communicate to you briefly such information pertaining to the city and its affairs with such recommendations and suggestions as appear to me to be worthy of your care and consideration. It is a cause for congratulation that so many members of this honorable body have had extended experience in the affairs of the city, an intimate knowledge of the city's wants and necessities acquired from a conscientious devotion to their official duties, covering in the case of some members, the entire period of the city's life. The new members of the council, all active and progressive citizens, it goes without saying, will very soon acquire and become familiar with the duties of their official position. For nearly the whole period since our incorparation as a city, the country has been laboring under a burden of financial depression, hardly equalled in its history, and it is another cause for congratulation that we enter upon our official duties at a time when the sun of prosperity, business activity and better times are rapidly rising. It is unnecessary for me to take your attention at this time at any length by suggesting figures and statistics, for the season that the sixth annual report of the city has just been distributed, which report shows in detail the financial and economic condition of the city.
