Book Description
Excerpt from Fifty Fables The universal use of La Fontaine's Fables in education, both in France and elsewhere, and the frequency of refer ences to them in French literature, render unnecessary any apology for this book. The editor has tried to supply what he has long felt to be urgently needed, a convenient and suitable selection of the Fables, edited in a scholarly manner with English annotation. The fifty here given, including nearly all the best known ones, and a few that are less familiar, will be as many as most classes care to read. Those who wish to devote further study to the Fables should have a complete edition, such as that of Regnier or of Clement (see Introduction, p. Regnier is here followed as to text and punctuation, except that the names of animals are not capitalized, and that a few words have been modernized; -ot't and -01'ent in verb endings are changed to -ait and - aie7zt; other changes are indicated in the notes. The editor hereby expresses his obligation to the two editions mentioned above, as well as to the other works referred to in the Introduction; Edgren and Burnet's french-english Dictionary has been useful in suggesting English renderings. The vocabulary is in tended to include every word in the text (including the Appendix, and quotations in the notes). Idiomatic phrases are to be sought in the Vocabulary, and translations are avoided in the notes. Perfect consistency has sometimes been sacrificed to convenience. Such information as seems. Book Description
Excerpt from Classic Fables: Selected and Edited for Primary Grades This book of fables fulfills two essentials for primary reading books, - it gives much reading matter with a small vocabulary, and that reading matter is classic literature. It will commend itself especially to intelligent, progressive teachers, who think that from the first children should read the best literature. This volume comprises the best known of the classic fables. These fables are so frequently alluded to in conversation and in literature that every well-educated person should be familiar with them. To children they appeal as fascinating stories of the animal world. Men and women find under their merry guise shrewd truths, the embodied wisdom of centuries. Book Description
Excerpt from Fifty-One Original Fables: With Morals and Ethical Index It is probable that Fable originated in Egypt, the land of hieroglyphics, thence domiciliated itself with the Israelites, whose figurative language it suited, and finally travelled westward by the way of Greece and Rome to us-always esteemed by the learned and comprehended by the illiterate. It was adopted and imitated by each nation as it advanced in civilization, and oftentimes with much success. Stories to Tell to Children

Stories to Tell to Children PDF Author: Sara Cone Bryant

Book Description
Excerpt from Stories to Tell to Children: Fifty-One Stories With Some Suggestions for Telling This little book came into being at the instance of my teaching friends all over this country. Their requests for more stories of the kind which were given in "How to Tell Stories to Children," and especially their urging that the stories they liked, in my telling, should be set down in print, seemed to justify the hope that the collection would be genuinely useful to them. That it may be, is the earnest desire with which it is offered. I hope it will be found to contain some stories which are new to the teachers and friends of little children, and some which are familiar, but in an easier form for telling than is usual. And I shall indeed be content if its value to those who read it is proportionate to the pleasure and mental stimulus which has come to me in the work among pupils and teachers which accompanied its preparation. Fifty Famous Fables

Fifty Famous Fables PDF Author: Lida B. McMurry
Publisher: DigiCat
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
Fifty Famous Fables is a collection of short fables compiled by Lida B. McMurry. McMurry was a primary school teacher and an author of books for children. Excerpt: "The fifty fables in this book have been selected for second grade reading because they are easily comprehended by pupils of that grade, and because they teach lessons which every child should learn. It is not wise to tell the class the moral application of the fables. It is better to have each pupil make his own application without any suggestion from the teacher."
