The Water Wedge 1200 device is 29 in. long, weighs 22 lb, and is manufactured from high strength steel. The explosive cartridge used to drive the Water Wedge is the Hudco WW120 industrial cartridge. This cartridge is actually a blank 12-gauge shotgun shell. To use the Water Wedge device, a 1-5/8-in.-diam. hole is drilled in the pavement, and the hole is filled with water. This study determined the suitability for cutting portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements in bomb damage repair situations. Test holes were made in an existing 12-in. PCC pavement, and a series of tests were conducted with two explosive charge cartridges. Results indicate that the Water Wedge is not an effective means of producing a smooth break in a 12-in.-thick PCC slab especially when used away from one or more free edges. The time required to accomplish the cut was also considered too long for thue repair and restoration of paved surfaces (REREPS) project.

The study reported herein is part of an overall investigation to develop performance criteria for cement-based repair materials. In Phase I of the study, preliminary criteria for dimensionally compatible repair materials were developed based on a review of the literature. This review concentrated on identifying pertinent material properties, appropriate test methods, and demonstrated field performance. Laboratory and field tests to evaluate the preliminary performance criteria were conducted in Phase II of the project Twelve candidate repair materials were selected for the experimental portion of the project Bach material was subjected to a series of standard and nonstandard laboratory tests to determine properties which were perceived to be of interest in a repair context and to provide some basic information about their behavior. These tests included: (a) unrestrained and restrained drying shrinkage, (b) modulus of elasticity, (c) tensile and compressive creep, (d) coefficient of thermal expansion, and (e) flexural, compressive, and direct tensile strengths. Concurrent field tests were also conducted to evaluate material durability. Results of the laboratory investigation are described herein. Results of laboratory and field performance tests will be correlated (Phase III) to provide a basis for development of performance criteria for cement-based materials that will provide durable concrete repairs.

The study reported herein is part of an overall investigation to develop performance criteria for cement-based materials. Preliminary performance criteria for dimensionally compatible repair materials were proposed in Phase I of the study. Laboratory and field tests to evaluate these criteria were conducted in Phase II of the project. The field-testing program described herein included installation of 12 selected cementitious repair materials in prefabricated repair cavities at each of three test sites and monitoring their performance during an 18-month period following installation. The test sites were selected to provide a wide variation in exposure conditions ranging from the hot and dry conditions encountered in Arizona, to hot and humid conditions encountered in Florida, to the northern climate of Illinois. In addition to the simulated repairs, the field performance of each material was evaluated with two restrained drying shrinkage test methods. Relative rankings of the materials were developed based on their field performance with resistance to cracking being the predominate factor in these rankings. Six materials demonstrated satisfactory performance regardless of exposure conditions. Two materials were susceptible to cracking at only one test site, and their performance is rated as marginal. The remaining four materials exhibited cracking in each exposure condition, and their performance is rated as unsatisfactory.
