Book Description
Low concennations (microgram/L of the perchlorate anion ClO4 have been measured in drinking water supplies in many states throughout the United States. Federal and state regulatory agencies are concerned about the possible adverse effects of perchlorate contamination as the anion is known to target the human thyroid gland and its metabolic-hormone-producing function. The provisional aenon level for drinking water established by the EPA and adopted by several states is 18 microgram/L (18 ppb) perchlorate; however other states have set levels as low as 1-4 microgram/L. The major sources of perchlorate contamination in surface and ground waters are propellant manufacturers, military installations defense connactors and agriculture.

Field Screening Europe

Field Screening Europe PDF Author: Johannes Gottlieb
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Pages : 448

Book Description
These Proceedings contain both oral and poster contributions to the first interna tional conference" Field Screening Europe - Strategies and Techniques for On-Site Investigation and Monitoring of Contaminated Soil, Water and Air", held in Karls ruhe September 29 - October 1, 1997. Environmental monitoring and the assessment of chemical contaminations are be coming more and more important. The integrated study of environmental con tamination in the field is a rather recent approach. "Field screening" indicates such field analytical tools, (quick) methods and strategies for on-site or in-situ environmental analysis and assessment of contamination. The classical strategy for investigating contaminants consists of the following steps: site studies, sampling, sample transport to the laboratory, sample preparation, and analysis. This strategy is rather expensive and time consuming. Some investiga tions, including sample preparation, may last several days. In many cases, the results must be available immediately and are of importance for further decisions. Field screening is an alternative or complement to this strategy that attempts to be cheaper and faster and may achieve the same quality of results. The most important argument for field analytical methods is that the superior accuracy and high costs of laboratory methods are disproportional to the possibility of arti facts from sampling and errors originating from spatial variations of contaminants.

Perchlorate in the Environment

Perchlorate in the Environment PDF Author: Edward Todd Urbansky
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461543037
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
Based on a symposium sponsored by the Environmental Division of the American Chemical Society, Perchlorate in the Environment is the first comprehensive book to address perchlorate as a potable water contaminant. The two main topics are: analytical chemistry (focusing on ion chromatography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry), and treatment or remediation. Also included are topics such as ion exchange, phytoremediation, bacterial reduction of perchlorate, bioreactors, and in situ bioremediation. To provide complete coverage, background chapters on fundamental chemistry, toxicology, and reulatory issues are also included. The authors are environmental consultants, government researchers, industry experts, and university professors from a wide array of disciplines.
