Book Description
At Campbell Red Lake Mine, Northwestern Ontario, rockburst activities were experienced in some mined-out workings. To determine the stress pattern,three-dimensional field stress measurements were carried out on the 14, 22and 27 levels and biaxial stresses were measured in four boxhole pillars onthe 9, 10 and 14 levels. Maximum stress transfer occurs horizontally acrossthe boxhole pillars, perpendicular to the hanging wall and footwall. Maximum stress magnitudes of 17 to 78 MPa, and minimum stresses of loworder or tensional were measured. The pillar stresses were less than expected. It is concluded that the peak strength of the boxhole pillarshas been exceeded and that these are in post-failure conditions.

A Five-year Review of the Canada-Ontario-Industry Rockburst Project
Author: D. G. F. Hedley
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780660139272
Category : Mine accidents
Languages : en
Pages : 54
Book Description
The Canada-Ontario-Industry Rockburst project was initiated in 1984 because of the re-emergence of a serious rockbursting problem in some of Ontario's mines. This report reviews the accomplishments realized during the first 5 years of the project, from 1984-89. The report describes the problem of seismicity in Ontario mines, seismic monitoring systems, scaling relationships, and the work conducted at the mines at Elliot Lake, Kirkland Lake, Red Lake, and Sudbury by each company involved. A list of publications and the personnel involved in the project are also included.

Hard Rock Miner's Handbook
Rock Mechanics Contributions and Challenges
Author: W. Hustrulid
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000151360
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1096
Book Description
The theme of the 31st US Symposium on Rock Mechanics is 'Rock Mechanics contributions and challenges', having as objective the examination and quantification of the progress that has been achieved in addressing the major practical challenges facing the science of rock mechanics and mine design. The 124 papers included in the proceedings cover areas such as: experimental studies (laboratory and field); conceptual, analytical, and numerical modeling; design and construction methods. 35 papers deal with practical mining problems and include information on rock reinforcement technology, blasting, rock bursts, open pit mining, remote sensing and borehole geophysics, mechanical fragmentation, and subsidence. Areas emphasized are coal and metal mine design problems. Other papers deal with the newest computer models, new instruments, fracture mechanics, new laboratory testing techniques, and in situ testing.

Support of Underground Excavations in Hard Rock
Author: E. Hoek
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9789054101864
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
The safe and economical construction of tunnels, mines, and other subterranean works depends on the correct choice of support systems to ensure that the excavations are stable. These support systems should be matched to the characterstics of the rock mass and the excavation techniques adopted. Establishing the support requirements, designing support systems and installing these correctly are essential elements in safe underground construction. This is a comprehensive and practical work which also gives access to user-friendly computer programmes which enable the investigation and design of support techniques. Details on how to obtain this software are also included in the book.
