Jewries at the Frontier

Jewries at the Frontier PDF Author: Sander L. Gilman
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 9780252067921
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
Traversing far flung Jewish communities in South Africa, Australia, Texas, Brazil, China, New Zealand, Quebec, and elsewhere, this wide-ranging collection explores the notion of "frontier" in the Jewish experience as a historical/geographical reality and a conceptual framework. As a compelling alternative to viewing the periphery only as a locus of dispossession and exile from the "homeland, " this work imagines a new Jewish history written as the history of the Jews at the frontier. In this new history, governed by the dynamics of change, confrontation, and accommodation, marginalized experiences are brought to the center and all participants are given voice. By articulating the tension between the center/periphery model and the frontier model, Jewries at the Frontier shows how the productive confrontation between and among cultures and peoples generates a new, multivocal account of Jewish history.

The Hidden History of South Africa's Book and Reading Cultures

The Hidden History of South Africa's Book and Reading Cultures PDF Author: Archie L. Dick
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442695080
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
The Hidden History of South Africa's Book and Reading Cultures shows how the common practice of reading can illuminate the social and political history of a culture. This ground-breaking study reveals resistance strategies in the reading and writing practices of South Africans; strategies that have been hidden until now for political reasons relating to the country's liberation struggles. By looking to records from a slave lodge, women's associations, army education units, universities, courts, libraries, prison departments, and political groups, Archie Dick exposes the key works of fiction and non-fiction, magazines, and newspapers that were read and discussed by political activists and prisoners. Uncovering the book and library schemes that elites used to regulate reading, Dick exposes incidences of intellectual fraud, book theft, censorship, and book burning. Through this innovative methodology, Dick aptly shows how South African readers used reading and books to resist unjust regimes and build community across South Africa's class and racial barriers.

Reading Spaces in South Africa, 1850–1920s

Reading Spaces in South Africa, 1850–1920s PDF Author: Archie L. Dick
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 110889691X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
Voluntary societies and government initiatives stimulated the growth of reading communities in South Africa in the second half of the nineteenth century. A system of Parliamentary grants to establish public libraries in country towns and villages nurtured a lively reading culture. A condition was that the library should be open free-of-charge to the general public. This became one more reading space, and others included book societies, reading societies, literary societies, debating societies, mechanics institutes, and mutual improvement societies. This Element explains how reading communities used these spaces to promote cultural and literary development in a unique ethos of improvement, and to raise political awareness in South Africa's colonial transition to a Union government and racial segregation.

Representing Africa

Representing Africa PDF Author: John McAleer
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526118378
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Southern Africa played a varied but vital role in Britain’s maritime and imperial stories: it was one of the most intricate pieces in the British imperial strategic jigsaw, and representations of southern African landscape and maritime spaces reflect its multifaceted position. Representing Africa examines the ways in which British travellers, explorers and artists viewed southern Africa in a period of evolving and expanding British interest in the region. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, contemporary travelogues and visual images, many of which have not previously been published in this context, this book posits landscape as a useful prism through which to view changing British attitudes towards Africa. Richly illustrated, this book will be essential reading for scholars and students interested in British, African, imperial and exploration history, art history, and landscape and environment studies.
