The author describes the reality of Latinas that reflects the confluence of gender, ethnicity, race, class, biology and contextual variables. Understanding the interaction of these variables in psychotherapy with ethnic minorities is crucial. The paper reviews specific psychosocial factors that make Latinas more vulnerable to mental health problems. The author presents a case of a Latina in which factors such as language barrier, rapid changes in the family, low educational attainment, domestic violence, and discrimination contributed to depressive and anxiety symptoms. Therapy followed feminist guidelines. The author discusses how these guidelines applied in the course of therapy. The author formulates the case according to a feminist perspective and learned helplessness theory. Basically, the client's experience of oppression, her traditional cultural role, and her low acculturation level combined to create helplessness and a sense of personal failure. The author analyzes her therapy with the client in terms of the impact of using Spanish in therapy and advantages and disadvantages of feminist principles. The author proposes that a feminist perspective with its emphasis on an egalitarian relationship, validation of feelings, and empowerment fits the oppressive reality of many Latinas. On the other hand, the author believes that feminist therapy disregards cognitive variables and the needs of other family members. The author also discusses her countertransference as a Latina therapist working with a Latina client.
