Feeding in Domestic Vertebrates

Feeding in Domestic Vertebrates PDF Author: V. L. Bels
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1845931068
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 372

Book Description
Domestication of vertebrates is based on the understanding of the needs of animals in their natural environment. Thus the success of this domestication throughout human history is largely dependant of the knowledge of the animal feeding behaviour. The aim of this volume is to provide advanced students and researchers with a review of current knowledge of feeding in domestic mammals and birds. The book also presents chapters on feeding behaviour in particular species; the scope is wide, covering not only ruminants, poultry and pigs, but also more specifically horses, rabbits and ostrich. Contributors include leading research workers from Europe, USA, Australia and South Africa.

Book Description
This book provides students and researchers with reviews of biological questions related to the evolution of feeding by vertebrates in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Based on recent technical developments and novel conceptual approaches, the book covers functional questions on trophic behavior in nearly all vertebrate groups including jawless fishes. The book describes mechanisms and theories for understanding the relationships between feeding structure and feeding behavior. Finally, the book demonstrates the importance of adopting an integrative approach to the trophic system in order to understand evolutionary mechanisms across the biodiversity of vertebrates.

Book Description
Excerpt from Scientific Feeding of the Domestic Animals The translation of Klimmer's admirable work on Veterinary Hygiene and Scientific Feeding of Animals was undertaken at the suggestion of the publisher, Mr. Alexander Eger, with the hope and belief that in doing so the translator was rendering a real service. While some of the ideas and practices outlined in this work do not entirely fit into the economy of our own country and many changes and adaptations might have been made and served a useful purpose, the translator believed that a practically literal translation of the work as offered by the author would be not only more interesting to the American student but really more instructive. A comparison of the careful and painstaking methods of the German people and their continual efforts to economize, with our own characteristically wasteful practices, even though conditions prevailing with us are entirely different, cannot fail to have a wholesome influence. The translator has therefore confined himself to adding only here and there a few words of explanation which he believed necessary for clearness, either in the form of footnotes or remarks in parentheses in the text. The translator wishes to express his sincere thanks to his friend, Dr. J. R. Mohler, Chief of the United States Bureau of Animal Industry, for reading the manuscript before its submission to the printer making valuable suggestions in the arrangement of the text and adding instructive footnotes. Dr. Mohler's suggestion that the extensive references to technical literature which are appended to most chapters in the original German edition, be omitted, was also followed. It was mutually agreed that since this would be of value only to students familiar with the German language the original work of Dr. Klimmer would be available to them for such references. The translator wishes further to express his appreciation to the publisher, Mr. Eger, for his patience in overlooking the many annoying but unavoidable delays in preparing the manuscript and reading the final proof of this translation. Biomechanics of Feeding in Vertebrates

Biomechanics of Feeding in Vertebrates PDF Author: V.L. Bels
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 364257906X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
Although feeding is not yet been thoroughly studied in many vertebrates taxa, and different conceptual and methodological approaches of the concerned scientists make a synthesis difficult, the aim of the editors is to provide a comprehensive overview of the feeding design in aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates with a detailed description of its functional properties. The book emphasizes the constant interaction between function and form, behaviour and morphology in the course of evolution of the feeding apparatus and way of feeding both complementary and basically related to survival interspecific competition, adaptation to environmental changes and adaptive radiations. Special stress is drawn onquantification of the observational and experimental data on the morphology and biomechanics of the feeding design and its element jaws, teeth, hyoidean apparatus, tongue, in order to allow present and further comparisons in an evolutionary perspective.
