Excerpt from Feeding Experiments The prime object in planning the feeding experiments re corded in this Bulletin was to-determine as far as possible the actual feeding value of the ensilage produced from the different varieties of corn described in Bulletin No. I, and incidentally to note the cost of a quart of milk or a pound of butter with the various rations used. The animals experimented on were a mixed herd of young and mature cows in various stages of lactation, from fresh in milk to six months after parturition. Half of the herd had been bought from farmers and were native cows, there were four heif ers with their first calves, and the' remainder were thoroughbred Shorthorns. Taking all together they were a fair lot of cows, weighing at beginning of experiment an average of 948% pounds.
