Natural Enemies

Natural Enemies PDF Author: John Knight
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135126003
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 262

Book Description
Wild animals raid crops, attack livestock, and sometimes threaten people. Conflicts with wildlife are widespread, assume a variety of forms, and elicit a range of human responses. Wildlife pests are frequently demonized and resisted by local communities while routinely 'controlled' by state authorities. However, to the great concern of conservationists, the history of many people-wildlife conflicts lies in human encroachment into wildlife territory. In Natural Enemies the authors place the analytical focus on the human dimension of these conflicts - an area often neglected by specialists in applied ecology and wildlife management - and on their social and political contexts. Case studies of specific conflicts are drawn from Africa, Asia, Europe and America, and feature an assortment of wild animals, including chimpanzees, elephants, wild pigs, foxes, bears, wolves, pigeons and ducks. These anthropologists challenge the narrow utilitarian view of wildlife pestilence by revealing the cultural character of many of our 'natural enemies'. Their reports from the 'front-line' expose one fact - human conflict with wildlife is often an expression of conflict between people.

A Treasury of Mah_y_na S_tras

A Treasury of Mah_y_na S_tras PDF Author: Zhenji Zhang
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 9780271003412
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 520

Book Description
The Mah&_ratnak&_ta S&_tra is one of the five major sutra groups in the Mah&_y&_na canon. Of the two great schools of Buddhism, Mah&_y&_na has the greatest number of adherents worldwide&—it prevails among the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Tibetans, and Vietnamese&—and contains within it a number of movements, notably Zen, which have been of growing interest in the West in recent decades. Yet despite this increased attention and enormous following, translations of Mah&_y&_na scriptures have been scarce and fragmentary; clearly, a comprehensive translation of a major work within the canon was called for. This volume addresses that need. It contains 22 of the 49 S&_tras of the Mah&_ratnak&_ta (or &"Treasury&") S&_tra, many translated for the first time in a Western language, selected and arranged to give the modern reader a progressive introduction to one of the world's major religious traditions. Subjects covered include M&_y&_ and miracles, the teachings on Consciousness, Emptiness, and monastic discipline, the Mystical Light of the Tath&_gata, and the devotional practice of Pure Land, making this a comprehensive source book of Mah&_y&_na Buddhism hitherto unavailable in English. The book also includes an introduction to provide historical and interpretive guidance, annotations that assist in the comprehension of difficult passages, and an extensive glossary that will be valuable to specialist and layman alike. A team of scholars, working in Taiwan, spent eight years translating the Treasury's million words from Chinese, using Tibetan texts for comparison and checking each S&_tra with an international board of scholars. In the course of translating from the original, special effort was made to retain both the devotional style appropriate for religious reading and the precision required by the scholar, while presenting the material with a clarity and flow that would make it accessible to the Western layman. The editors then selected, arranged, and annotated the 22 S&_tras presented here. Published in cooperation with The Institute for Advanced Studies of World Religions.

The Trellis

The Trellis PDF Author: Jools Cantor
Publisher: Dactylion LLC
ISBN: 1735593621
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
Debbie Peck is a conflict resolution mediator fighting for relevance and her next paycheck in Chicago's near future. So when her headhunter offers her an interview at the Jefferson Trellis, she jumps at the chance to climb what remains of America's corporate ladder. The pay would provide upward mobility, the experience would elevate her marketability, and the murders plaguing the office . . . well, they were a risk she could manage given the right opportunity. As Debbie navigates her new position and Homicide Detective Melody Jackson investigates the Trellis' tenants, they each untwine the tendrils of a dark secret creeping through its corner offices. Like the botanical gardens at the Trellis's base, their worlds weave between the lush, the stark, the delicate, and the deadly. Dancing between mystery, suspense, and speculative fiction, THE TRELLIS deftly layers a few years of decline on the current American condition. Whether it's the drone swarms, the deepfakes, the halves-of-one-tenth-of-one-percent, or the have-naughts, the technology has predictably improved while the people predictably haven't. Debbie's world is both familiar and fantastic, both funny and frightening, but to call it a dystopia would damn our own to the same definition.
