Fatigue Crack Growth in Welded Beams

Fatigue Crack Growth in Welded Beams PDF Author: Manfred A. Hirt

Pages : 42

Book Description
The fatigue behavior of welded steel beams is evaluated using the fracture mechanics concepts of stable crack growth. A fracture mechanics model for cracks originating from the pores in the web-to-flange fillet weld is developed. Esstimates of the stress-intensity factor are made that numerically describe the initial flaw condition. With the final crack size known, a theoretical crack-growth equation was derived from the fatigue test data of the welded beams. The derived relationship compares well with actual crack-growth measurements on a welded beam and available data from crack growth specimens. (Author).

Fatigue and Fracture of Weldments

Fatigue and Fracture of Weldments PDF Author: Uwe Zerbst
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030040739
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive and thorough guide to those readers who are lost in the often-confusing context of weld fatigue. It presents straightforward information on the fracture mechanics and material background of weld fatigue, starting with fatigue crack initiation and short cracks, before moving on to long cracks, crack closure, crack growth and threshold, residual stress, stress concentration, the stress intensity factor, J-integral, multiple cracks, weld geometries and defects, microstructural parameters including HAZ, and cyclic stress-strain behavior. The book treats all of these essential and mutually interacting parameters using a unique form of analysis.

Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Rates of Weldments in Q1N Steel

Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Rates of Weldments in Q1N Steel PDF Author: B. F. Jones
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 33

Book Description
Low frequency fatigue crack growth rates in air and seawater are reported for manual metal arc, synergic metal inert gas, electron beam and laser beam welds in Q1N steel. The stress corrosion crack growth susceptibility in seawater of the weldments was also studied and both the electron beam and laser beam welds exhibited susceptibility whilst the other welds and parent steel did not. All welds except the 'as-welded' laser beam welds showed silmilar fatigue crack growth rates to the parent plate. When tested in seawater the laser beam weld was found to exhibit exceptionally fast crack growth rates. The factors influencing fatigue crack growth in weldments are discussed. (Author).

Recommendations for Fatigue Design of Welded Joints and Components

Recommendations for Fatigue Design of Welded Joints and Components PDF Author: A. F. Hobbacher
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319237578
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 153

Book Description
This book provides a basis for the design and analysis of welded components that are subjected to fluctuating forces, to avoid failure by fatigue. It is also a valuable resource for those on boards or commissions who are establishing fatigue design codes. For maximum benefit, readers should already have a working knowledge of the basics of fatigue and fracture mechanics. The purpose of designing a structure taking into consideration the limit state for fatigue damage is to ensure that the performance is satisfactory during the design life and that the survival probability is acceptable. The latter is achieved by the use of appropriate partial safety factors. This document has been prepared as the result of an initiative by Commissions XIII and XV of the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
