Book Description
The fatigue crack growth of Ti-6Al-4V in the diffusion bond annealed condition was examined in the range of growth rates from 10 to the minus 12th power to 10 to the minus 4th power m/cycle with the use of compact tension and part-through-crack specimens. The effects of cyclic frequency and maximum stress were investigated. Fractured surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy over the entire range of crack growth. The fatigue data were fit empirically to a number of crack propagation laws, none of which was able to predict the entire range of crack growth from threshold to unstable fracture. When the fatigue crack growth rates were compared with those of Ti-6Al-4V of other microstructures, it was found that the diffusion bond annealed was among the most fatigue crack resistant of any microstructure examined. Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Concept and Test Results for Al- and Ti-Alloys

Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Concept and Test Results for Al- and Ti-Alloys PDF Author: G. Marci
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Fatigue crack propagation
Languages : en
Pages : 15

Book Description
The fact that fatigue crack propagation (FCP) rates approach zero asymptotically as the fracture mechanics loading parameter ?K decreases toward certain limiting values is the reason for the scientific interest in these so-called 'threshold' values. In respect to the practical use of these 'limiting values', the author divides them into two groups, namely in 'non-propagation conditions' ?Kth and in a material property 'FCP-threshold' ?KT. It is shown that ?KT must be an integral part in the functional correlation between FCP-rates and the cyclic loading conditions expressed in ?Keff. The experimental determination of ?Kth on six Al-alloys and four Ti-compressor disk alloys show that ?KT exists for all the alloys investigated. The effect of temperature on ?KT was investigated on one Ti 6Al 4V- and one Ti 8Al 1V 1Mo disk material at room temperature (RT) and 260°C and at RT, 260°C and 360°C, respectively. No temperature effect on ?KT was found for the temperature range investigated.

Fatigue Crack Growth and J-Integral Fracture Parameters of Ti-6Al-4V at Ambient and Cryogenic Temperatures

Fatigue Crack Growth and J-Integral Fracture Parameters of Ti-6Al-4V at Ambient and Cryogenic Temperatures PDF Author: RL. Tobler
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Crack propagation
Languages : en
Pages : 25

Book Description
Fatigue crack propagation and fracture parameters for 2.03-cm-thick compact specimens of an extra-low-interstitial Ti-6Al-4V alloy were measured at temperatures between 295 K (70°F) and 4 K (-453°F). Plane-strain linear-elastic and J-integral fracture toughness test results were in good agreement: the KIc values for this alloy decreased from 105 MN/m3|2 at room temperature to 54 MN/m3vb2 at 4 K, and a ductile-to-brittle fracture transition occurred in the range 125 to 76 K (-235 to -323°F). Despite this transition, the fatigue crack growth rates (da/dN) of this alloy remained temperature insensitive over the entire ambient-to-cryogenic range. These fatigue and fracture results are compared with data previously reported for a normal-interstitial Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Pages : 305

Book Description
This book offers a concise introduction to fatigue crack growth, based on practical examples. It discusses the essential concepts of fracture mechanics, fatigue crack growth under constant and variable amplitude loading and the determination of the fracture-mechanical material parameters. The book also introduces the analytical and numerical simulation of fatigue crack growth as well as crack initiation. It concludes with a detailed description of several practical case studies and some exercises. The target group includes graduate students, researchers at universities and practicing engineers.

Fatigue Crack Growth and Crack Closure Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Under Variable-Amplitude Loadings

Fatigue Crack Growth and Crack Closure Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Under Variable-Amplitude Loadings PDF Author: M. Jono

Pages : 20

Book Description
Fatigue crack growth tests under constant-amplitude and repeated two-step loadings were carried out on a (? + ?) Ti-6Al-4V alloy which has duplex structure made up of equiaxed primary ?-phase grains with a discontinuous fine ?-phase dispersed in the boundaries. It was found that fatigue crack grew along ?-phase grain boundaries and that the fracture surface was very rough in the low stress intensity region under constant-amplitude loading. On the other hand, in the high region, transgranular crack growth was observed and the fracture surface was relatively smooth. The crack opening point, Kop, was affected by the amplitude of low-level load, ?KL, under repeated two-step loadings where the high-level load amplitude was kept constant. Kop was found to be higher than that predicted by Kop -- Kmax relationship under constant-amplitude loading and the fracture surface was rougher in comparison with that under constant-amplitude loading which has the identical stress intensity range. It was concluded that the crack opening point was controlled by both plasticity-induced crack closure in terms ofKmax and roughness-induced crack closure resulted from rougher surface in ?KL.
