Nano and Microstructural Design of Advanced Materials

Nano and Microstructural Design of Advanced Materials PDF Author: M. A. Meyers
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080537235
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
The importance of the nanoscale effects has been recognized in materials research for over fifty years, but it is only recently that advanced characterization and fabrication methods are enabling scientists to build structures atom-by-atom or molecule-by molecule. The understanding and control of the nanostructure has been, to a large extent, made possible by new atomistic analysis and characterization methods pioneered by transmission electron microscopy. Nano and Microstructural Design of Advanced Materials focuses on the effective use of such advanced analysis and characterization techniques in the design of materials. - Teaches effective use of advanced analysis and characterization methods at an atomistic level - Contains many supporting examples of materials in which such design concepts have been successfully applied

Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metals and Alloys

Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metals and Alloys PDF Author: Ulrich Krupp
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527315373
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
This comprehensive overview of the whole field of fatigue and fracture of metallic materials covers both the theoretical background and some of the latest experimental techniques. It provides a summary of the complex interactions between material microstructure and cracks, classifying them with respect to the overall damage process with a focus on microstructurally short cracks and dynamic embrittlement. It furthermore introduces new concepts for the numerical treatment of fatigue microcrack propagation and their implementation in fatigue-life prediction models. This comprehensive overview of the whole field of fatigue and fracture of metallic materials covers both the theoretical background and the latest experimental techniques. Effects of Mean Load on Creep and Fatigue Crack Growth at Elevated Temperature

Effects of Mean Load on Creep and Fatigue Crack Growth at Elevated Temperature PDF Author: K-Y Hour

Category : Crack closure
Languages : en
Pages : 12

Book Description
The effects of mean stress on crack growth behavior have been studied by performing various load ratio experiments at elevated temperature. It was found that at low load ratios a transgranular crack growth mode dominates whereas at high load ratios an intergranular crack growth mode was observed. The crack closure phenomenon was observed for experiments in which the transgranular crack growth mode was significant. In such cases, the crack opening stress was found to be constant for Stage II crack growth for each individual experiment at fixed load ratio, but varied with load ratio. Based on this, it was found that the crack growth rate correlated well with the effective stress intensity factor range, ?Keff. At R = 0.6 and above, crack closure effects were not observed and the linear rate line integral parameter, C*, based on elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, was found to correlate better crack growth rate because time-dependent processes were significant in those experiments. In the regime where both fatigue and creep mechanisms might interact, the linear cumulative rule, which combines the two parameters ?Keff and C*, accounting for fatigue and creep effects, respectively, was found to overestimate crack growth rates.

Book Description
The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings entitled, FATIGUE - ENVIRONMENT AND TEMPER ATURE EFFECT, address the overview of temperature and environmental effects of fatigue, room temperature environmental effects, high temperature and environmental effect - mechanisms, high tempera ture and environmental effect - mechanisms, materials and design-engineering applications. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Messrs. Joseph Bernier and Dan McNaught of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the book. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Wright, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated.
