Fatigue of Steel Bridge Decks

Fatigue of Steel Bridge Decks PDF Author: Timothy Russell Gurney
Publisher: Bernan Press(PA)
ISBN:
Category : Bridges
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
A broadly-based research programme on orthotropic steel bridge decks, led by D.E. Nunn, was carried out between 1963 and 1987 covering traffic usage, surfacing and fatigue. Initially the work was predictive, determining the main variables and establishing the basis of a fatigue assessment methods. Following the discovery of fatigue cracks in service, methods of repair and strengthening were developed. This work has been recorded in internal reports, but much of it has not been generally available until publication of this review. Experimental results are presented and recommendations given for the fatigue classification of welded joints in orthotropic decks.

Measurements and Interpretation of Dynamic Loads on Bridges

Book Description
In the last few decades, the traffic intensity and the wheel loads on bridges have increased considerably, resulting in fatigue cracks and repairs. Within the framework of research funded by the European Coal and Steel Community, several programmes have been carried out to investigate the traffic loads, the stresses they produce and the fatigue performance of various details. These programmes have been carried out by seven research institutes in six countries of the European Community. Especially in the programmes carried out now, the experimental research has been carried out in combination with numerical and analytical studies to obtain better insight into the stress distribution of the various connections in steel orthotropic bridge decks with closed longitudinal stiffeners. This report highlights the Dutch results obtained in the fourth phase research. The research programme includes a survey on existing bridges in the Netherlands to obtain information about the different detailing in the orthotropic deck plate and the fatigue behaviour of the details. Based on available research results, it appeared to be necessary to perform some full-scale fatigue tests on the longitudinal stiffener splice joint to improve the detail and to obtain information about repairing this detail. Fatigue design curves have been defined for the longitudinal stiffener splice joint as well as the longitunal stiffener to deck plate connection. For the latter, no additional experiments were needed. Experimental as well as numerical research on the longitudinal stiffener to crossbeam connection has been carried out to improve the knowledge of the different types of detail.

Pages : 334

Book Description
This volume addresses the specific subject of fatigue, a subject not familiar to many engineers, but still relevant for proper and good design of numerous steel structures. It explains all issues related to the subject: Basis of fatigue design, reliability and various verification formats, determination of stresses and stress ranges, fatigue strength, application range and limitations. It contains detailed examples of applications of the concepts, computation methods and verifications.

Book Description
These two volumes of proceedings contain 11 invited keynote papers and 172 contributed papers presented at the International Conference on Advances in Steel Structures held on 11-14 December 1996 in Hong Kong. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics and have been contributed from over 20 countries around the world. The conference, the first ever of its kind in Hong Kong, provided a forum for discussion and dissemination by researchers and designers of recent advances in the analysis, behaviour, design and construction of steel structures. The papers in the proceedings report the current state-of-the-art and point to the future directions of structural steel research. Volume I contains 93 papers on the analysis, behaviour, design and construction of framed structures and bridges, with 90 papers in Volume II dealing with plates, shells, analysis, optimization and computer applications, dynamics and seismic design, fatigue, and soil-structure interaction.

Fatigue Investigation of Slit Rib-to-floor Beam Connections in Steel Orthotropic Bridge Decks

Fatigue Investigation of Slit Rib-to-floor Beam Connections in Steel Orthotropic Bridge Decks PDF Author: Jayne Marks

Book Description
The steel orthotropic bridge deck (SOBD) is a bridge deck system which consists of longitudinal open or closed ribs that pass through transverse floor beams with a continuous steel deck plate on top. All of these components are joined using welded connections which can be costly to fabricate and prone to fatigue cracks. The rib-to-floor beam (RFB) connection in an SOBD is labor intensive and fatigue sensitive. In the past, the RFB connection has either been a fully fitted connection or a connection with an extended cut-out which is larger than the opening in the floor beam web for the rib to pass through. A third RFB detail that includes an additional opening below the rib bottom, which is not an extension of the rib opening, has been proposed and is studied herein. This connection, termed a "slit RFB connection," is similar to the fitted connection with closed, U-shaped ribs passing continuously through matching openings in the floor beam webs, but an additional opening contained entirely within the floor beam web allows for relatively unrestrained out-of-plane rib rotation. The slit RFB connection has not been used or studied previously, and shows potential for efficient, automated fabrication and good fatigue performance.
