Book Description
This SAE Part Standard covers selected metric screws, hex bolts, and nuts manufactured in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and SAE fastener standards. This document covers fastener materials often used in ship systems and equipment but its use may be applied wherever fasteners of the covered materials are used. This document permits the fasteners to be identified and ordered by a part or identifying number (PIN) as defined in this document. The use of SAE J2295M has been limited due to the fact that most of the metric nuts and bolts available in the United States have not been made to the ASME dimensional standards referenced in SAE J2295. Rather, most of the available metric products available have been manufactured to DIN and ISO standards. ASME has recently been withdrawing their metric dimensional standards in favor of the ISO standards. Other references in SAE J2295 may also have been withdrawn or superseded.Generally, the fasteners to ISO and other National metric fasteners available on the market are interchangeable with those covered by SAE J2295M. It is recommended that ISO metric fasteners be used for new design. For support of current designs, SAE J2295M requirements can be compared to fasteners manufactured to ISO and other National Metric Standards to determine the suitability of these more readily available fasteners. However, it is considered important that SAE J2295M standard be available for reference to support those applications where it has been used. The Part Identification Numbers (PINs) in SAE J2295M may have been used on drawings and users may need to refer to this part standard to identify the characteristics of these fasteners.

Part Standard SAE J2295 that originally covered both inch and metric fasteners has been split into two documents with J2295 covering inch dimensioned fasteners and this standard, J2295M, covering metric dimensioned fasteners. An optional J2295 prefix has been added to the Part Identifying Numbers (PIN's) in order to more clearly identify this standard as the source of the PIN. This revision adds Copper Allot 260, Nickel Alloys 625 and 686 and titanium alloy 32 (UNS R55111) for the ASTM F 467 and F 468 fasteners while making titanium alloy 19 inactive for new design. For inspection of small lots, the references specifying lot size have been changed. The reference specifications for dry film lubricants and for electroplating have changed. Hot-dipped and mechanically deposited zinc coatings have been deleted and Zinc/Aluminum) coatings have been added. Guidance has been added to the Note Section regarding the availability and interchangeability of several copper alloys. Additional configurations of slotted and jam nuts have been added. A note on galling is added to provide guidance when selecting aluminum, titanium, nickel alloys and austenitic stainless steel fasteners. Stainless steel alloys have been updated to agree with those listed in referenced product standards. The tables identifying material suffixes for the part identification numbers have been made user friendly by: aIdentifying the applicable ASME dimensional standard in the table bProviding strength information to help the designer select an appropriate fastener. (Strength values are for info only and do not supersede requirements of the referenced product standard). cIdentifying the coatings recommended for each fastener.

Book Description
This SAE Part Standard covers selected inch screws, hex bolts, and nuts manufactured in accordance with SAE and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) fastener standards. Appendix A covers bolt blanks to manufacture fitted bolts of specific materials. This document covers fastener materials often used in ship systems and equipment but its use may be applied wherever fasteners of the covered materials are used. This document permits the fasteners to be identified and ordered by a part or identifying number (PIN) as defined in this document. Three grades of Ni-Cr-Mo-W alloy (UNS N06686) are now covered. Ni-Cr-Mo-Cb (UNS N06625) is added for high temperature applications. Copper Alloy Brass 260 (UNS C26000) is added to provide a cold heading grade. Bolt blanks are added to reduce machining waste for shipbuilders and repair activities. Continuous threaded cap screws are added for energy absorption applications and also as an option where fit ups vary. SAE J429 and J995 Grade 2 steels are added to primarily support existing applications and are not recommended for new design. A note on galling is added to provide guidance when selecting aluminum, titanium, nickel alloys and austenitic CRES. CRES alloys updated to list those which are listed in referenced product standards. Designators have been added for pigmented overcoats for Zinc/Aluminum coatings.

Book Description
This SAE Standard provides part numbers for the identification of fasteners for ship systems and equipment. This document lists some of the more common industry standards that have associated part numbering systems. In addition, this document provides part numbers for screws and nuts to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) fastener standards covering materials most often used in ship systems and equipment. The purpose of this document is to assist the designer and other personnel in providing standard part numbers for the most commonly used fasteners for ship systems and equipment. A part identification number (PIN) is normally required for all military applications and provides a useful means of communicating fastener requirements to suppliers and manufacturers in a very succinct manner.
