Family Violence

Family Violence PDF Author: Sandra J. Kaplan
Publisher: American Psychiatric Pub
ISBN: 9780890420102
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
Family violence poses a significant threat to society -- it is repetitive, increases in severity as it persists, and is transmitted across generations and to society. However, it often escapes undiagnosed, and resources for both treatment and research are either inadequate or lacking. Family Violence: A Clinical and Legal Guide provides the most comprehensive look to date at the problem of family violence. Professionals in mental health, medicine, and law who encounter victims of family violence will find this book an invaluable resource. It will also serve as an excellent educational tool for psychiatric and psychology students, and it is intended to stimulate the development of effective curricula for both medical and mental health professionals and the public. Chapter by chapter, this book covers all types of family violence, including child physical and sexual abuse, child neglect, domestic violence, and elder abuse and neglect. Risk factors specific to each type of family violence are identified. Assessment and treatment guidelines are offered, including a discussion of therapy for memory of trauma in adult survivors of childhood maltreatment. The prevention of abuse is addressed, and clinical practice resources are listed. Legal information pertinent to both patients and clinicians is provided by Howard A. Davidson, J.D., Director, ABA Center on Children and the Law, American Bar Association, Washington, D.C. In each of the first seven chapters, a section entitled "Legal Commentary" focuses on two areas: First, issues related to abused persons, other family members, and offenders are outlined. Next, "Guidance for Mental Health Professionals and Practitioners" discusses the legal responsibilities and rights of mental health and other medical professionals and offer guidance for those testifying in legal proceedings. An appendix includes legal resources.

Violence Prevention Resource Guide for Parents

Book Description
Developed in response to requests from a variety of family support professionals, teachers, and parents, this sourcebook offers information on preventing violence in children at different stages of development. The introduction provides a rationale for the development of this sourcebook, discusses parental influence, and describes how parents can use this guide. The sourcebook is organized to offer access to information on the three primary developmental stages in childhood: the early years (birth to 5 years), middle childhood (6 to 12 years), and adolescence (13 to 18 years). Within each section are subsections that give an overview of development during that stage and that identify some of the issues affecting violence in children and over which parents have significant control. In addition, each subsection is summarized as a one-page handout for parents; these summary sheets are designed for photocopying as workshop handouts. Topics discussed in the early years section include brain development and infant attachment, impulse control, prosocial skills, violence on television and other media, toys that promote violent behavior, early childcare experiences, and managing family conflict. Areas highlighted in middle childhood include peer relationships, popular entertainment media, after-school care and monitoring, school success, conflict management, and caring connections. Topics discussed in the adolescent section include activities and volunteerism, substance abuse, access to weapons, peer influences, dating relationships, and transitions from adolescence to young adulthood. Each section contains references. The guide also includes links to a large on-line appendix with longer articles supplementing the various subsections that can be accessed through the National Parent Information Network web site.
