Marital Conflict and Children PDF Author: E. Mark Cummings
Publisher: Guilford Press
ISBN: 1462503292
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
From leading researchers, this book presents important advances in understanding how growing up in a discordant family affects child adjustment, the factors that make certain children more vulnerable than others, and what can be done to help. It is a state-of-the-science follow-up to the authors' seminal earlier work, Children and Marital Conflict: The Impact of Family Dispute and Resolution. The volume presents a new conceptual framework that draws on current knowledge about family processes; parenting; attachment; and children's emotional, physiological, cognitive, and behavioral development. Innovative research methods are explained and promising directions for clinical practice with children and families are discussed.

Critical Theory and Marital Quarrels

Critical Theory and Marital Quarrels PDF Author: Todor Hristov
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1666952869
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
Critical Theory and Marital Quarrels: Dynamics of Passionate Speech analyzes the pneumatics of conflict through a discursive archeology of police reports, court proceedings, psychiatric cases, therapy sessions, eighteenth-century relationship advice literature, and the nineteenth-century fiction. Todor Hristov argues that in order to extract knowledge from the noise of the marital fights, preachers, moralists, physicians, alienists, sociologists discarded the words as a slag, and in consequence, they were unable to explain either the recurrence or the power of discord. This study is intended as an analysis of the discursive mechanism of contentious speech based on concepts derived from critical theory, discourse analysis, speech act theory and semiotics. The discursive mechanism of quarreling is summed up in the concept of passionate speech relevant beyond family scenes, to scenes of political or public contention. This book applies the concept to examine critically the language of contemporary couples therapy and to describe the unintended effects of the passions shared by the clients and the therapists.

Book Description
“This remarkable volume...is both conceptually robust and highly practical...The book promises to heighten awareness among clinicians around the world about the diagnostic and therapeutic importance of family relationships in human health and disease. It also will serve as a roadmap for the critically important work that lies ahead.” —David G. Addiss Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership Kalamazoo, MI Family problems and family violence are major global concerns that have a vast impact on both psychological and physical health, and economic well-being. This text, the only book of its kind, describes recent innovations in defining and assessing family problems and family violence. It provides a framework for improving global assessment of relational processes as addressed in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). The book includes a complete set of practical clinical and public health tools—easily implemented across a wide range of setting—for defining, screening, and assessing family violence in accordance with these new definitions. It reviews the impact of family violence on all aspects of physical and mental health and economic well-being, including global considerations of cross-cultural relationship assessment, and provides recommendations for modifications and cross-cultural validation. The book is consistently organized for ease of use and consolidates ICD codes into four scientifically based categories: intimate partner violence, partner relationship distress, child maltreatment, and parent-child relation problems. Clinicians who assess and treat family violence and students and policymakers will benefit from several new state-of-the-art screening tools and structured interviews that can be easily administered in hospitals, clinics, and other health care settings. This text will also be an important addition to graduate training programs across many disciplines regarding the assessment of family maltreatment, parent-child problems, and relationship discord. Key Features: Contains a wealth of current validated screening and interview tools that can be used in clinical or research settings Provides a global perspective on assessing and treating family violence Provides recommendations for surveillance of family problems and family violence addressed in the ICD-11 Highlights the implications of relational problems for mental and physical health and economic well-being in a global context

Family Memory

Family Memory PDF Author: Radmila Švaříčková Slabáková
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000527166
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
In Family Memory: Practices, Transmissions and Uses in a Global Perspective, researchers from five different continents explore the significance of family memory as an analytical tool and a research concept. Family memory is the most important memory community. This volume illustrates the range and power of family memories, often neglected by memory studies dealing with larger mnemonic entities. This book highlights the potential of family memory research for understanding societies’past and present and the need for a more comprehensive and systematic use of family memories. The contributors explain how family memories can be a valuable resource across a range of settings pertaining to individual and collective identities, national memories, intergenerational transmission processes and migration, transnational and diasporic studies. This volume presents the past, present and future of family memory as a prospective field of memory studies and the role of family memory in intergenerational transmission of social and political values. Family memory of violent events and genocide is also looked at, with discussions of the Armenian Genocide, Russian Revolution and Rwandan Genocide. This book will be an important read for cultural and oral historians; family historians; public historians; researchers in narrative studies, psychology, politics and international studies.
