The End of the Fairy-tale Bride

The End of the Fairy-tale Bride PDF Author: Cornelia Powell
Publisher: Createspace Independent Pub
ISBN: 9781505514889

Pages : 290

Book Description
Wedding folklorist and costume historian Cornelia Powell, along with her insightful way of looking at the life of Princess Diana, forms a captivating view into the world of brides and ceremony, of fairy tales and princess myths. "The End of the Fairy-Tale Bride: For Better or Worse, How Princess Diana Rescued the Great White Wedding"—this first volume of irresistible stories—combines bridal mythology, fashion history, goddess legends, royal ceremonies, and a bit of cosmic mystery with the life of the world's most famous celebrity and the ultimate princess bride. The author has a singular perspective on Princess Diana's influence on weddings including their complement of womanly rituals. On the gilded wave following Diana's royal wedding in 1981—reinventing an outdated bridal industry and bringing weddings back into high-style—Cornelia created a store for the new woman emerging that decade…a design haven for this "grown-up bride." And her invitation over the years to all those brides-to-be, “don't settle for being a princess for a day, be a goddess for a lifetime,” shapes the heart of this book. Called “such an intimate experience from which the reader emerges transformed,” the book wraps its narrative inside the heart-opening legacy of an archetypal princess who changed our notion of 'happily ever after', who ended the myth of the fairy-tale bride, and who opened a tender pathway to love for those she left behind.

The Dharma of The Princess Bride

The Dharma of The Princess Bride PDF Author: Ethan Nichtern
Publisher: North Point Press
ISBN: 0865478384
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 213

Book Description
An engagingly contemporary approach to Buddhism—through the lens of an iconic film and its memorable characters Humorous yet spiritually rigorous in the tradition of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and The Tao of Pooh, drawing from pop culture and from personal experience, The Dharma of “The Princess Bride” teaches us how to understand and navigate our most important personal relationships from a twenty-first-century Buddhist perspective. Friendship. Romance. Family. These are the three areas Ethan Nichtern delves into, taking as departure points the indelible characters from Rob Reiner’s perennially popular film—Westley, Fezzik, Vizzini, Count Rugen, Princess Buttercup, and others—as he also draws lessons from his own life and his work as a meditation teacher. Nichtern devotes the first section of the book to exploring the dynamics of friendship. Why do people become friends? What can we learn from the sufferings of Inigo Montoya and Fezzik? Next, he leads us through all the phases of illusion and disillusion we encounter in our romantic pursuits, providing a healthy dose of lightheartedness along the way by sharing his own Princess Buttercup List and the vicissitudes of his dating life as he ponders how we idealize and objectify romantic love. Finally, Nichtern draws upon the demands of his own family history and the film’s character the Grandson to explore the dynamics of “the last frontier of awakening,” a reference to his teacher Chogyam Trungpa’s claim that it’s possible to be enlightened everywhere except around your family. With The Dharma of “The Princess Bride” in hand, we can set out on the path to contemporary Buddhist enlightenment with the most important relationships in our lives.

Fairies, Fractious Women, and the Old Faith

Fairies, Fractious Women, and the Old Faith PDF Author: Regina Buccola
Publisher: Susquehanna University Press
ISBN: 9781575911038
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
Fairies, unruly women, and vestigial Catholicism constituted a frequently invoked triad in late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century drama which has seldom been critically examined and therefore constitutes a significant lacuna in scholarly treatments of early modern theater, including the work of Shakespeare. Fairy tradition has lost out in scholarly critical convention to the more masculine mythologies of Christianity and classical Greece and Rome, in which female deities either serve masculine gods or are themselves masculinized (i.e., Diana as a buckskinned warrior). However, the fairy tradition is every bit as significant in our critical attempts to situate early modern texts in their historical contexts as the references to classical texts and struggles associated with state-mandated religious beliefs are widely agreed to be. fairy, rebellious woman, quasi-Catholic trio repeatedly stages resistance to early modern conceptions of appropriate class and gender conduct and state-mandated religion in A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Cymbeline, All's Well That Ends Well, and Ben Jonson's The Alchemist.

Fitcher's Brides

Fitcher's Brides PDF Author: Gregory Frost

Category : Fiction

Book Description
"1843 is 'the last year of the world'--according to Elias Fitcher, a charismatic preacher in upstate New York. There he's established a utopian community on an estate outside the town of Jeckyll's Glen, where the faithful wait, work, and pray for the world to end. Vernelia, Amy, and Catherine Charter are three young townswomen whose father falls under the Reverend's hypnotic sway. In their old house, where ghostly voices whisper from the walls, the girls are ruled by their stepmother, who is ruled by the fiery preacher in turn. Determined to spend Eternity as a married man, Fitcher casts his eye on Vernelia, and before much longer the two are wed. But living on the man's estate, separated from her family, it's not long before Vern learns the extent of her husband's dark side ... Inspired by the classic fairy tales "Bluebeard" and "The Fitcher Bird", this dark fantasy is a story of faith gone wrong, and evil countered by one brave, true soul."--Back cover.
