Book Description
This book relates the military experiences compiled from a twenty-five year naval career of a small town boy whose elementary and high school endeavors were somewhat less than satisfactory, but who was given the opportunity, provided by that inconceivably destructive event, known as World War II, to redeem his poor educational activity and serve in the Navy reasonably successfully. The book follows his career as he rose from a very young and inexperienced Ensign to the rank of Commander. Early on, he acquired a specialty designation as cryptologist, dealing with codes and ciphers in the Naval Communications system. This book depicts the good times, the hard times, and the difficult times of the voyage to the top of the military organization in which he spent the biggest part of his Navy career. He spent many years in the field spreading the communication security gospel directly to the communication officers of various ships and stations. Finally, after 20 years of total service, he was assigned to the Naval Security Group Headquarters in Washington, D.C. as deputy to the head of the Communication Security Organization with oversight and management responsibilities over the field activities. Later, when his boss was assigned to duty at a field activity, he was elevated to the head of the organization. After about a year as head of the Communication Security Organization, he was given a very promising assignment as Commanding Officer of a newly established Naval Security Group command in California. As expressed in the book, this was a Camelot assignment. Shortly after World War II ended and very early in his career, he met and married his lifetime companion. This relationship produced six children, five daughters and a son, who survived a change of venue every two to three years and all became college graduates, including one daughter who was born with a physical disability denying her the ability to get around without assistance. All achieved exceptional success in their chosen occupational pursuits. He and his brides commandment that all the children must expect to stay in school at least sixteen years, was really very rewarding for them in their later lives. The book concludes with a comparison of his Navy life with the famous and well used Navy description of a hypothetically perfect sea voyage, Fair Winds and Following Seas.

All Present and Accounted For: The 1972 Alaska Grounding of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis and the Heroic Efforts that Saved the Ship

All Present and Accounted For: The 1972 Alaska Grounding of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis and the Heroic Efforts that Saved the Ship PDF Author: Steven J. Craig

Book Description
It was late November--one of the coldest periods to be on a ship near Alaska. The Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis had run aground during a severe storm and was taking on water. The engine room flooded, disabling the engines. Mountainous seas and gale force winds pounded the Jarvis, and to make matters worse, the ship was floating toward a rocky coastline that would surely destroy it and probably kill most, if not all, of the men. The ship's captain ordered an emergency message be sent to the Seventeenth Coast Guard District Office in Juneau requesting Coast Guard assistance. But there were no Coast Guard assets near enough to provide immediate help. At 7:04 p.m., for one of the few times in Coast Guard history, a MAYDAY call for help would come from a Coast Guard vessel. This is the incredible story of the grounding and near sinking of the USCGC Jarvis and how her crew fought to save their ship--and themselves--from disaster.

Expeditionary Surgery at Sea

Expeditionary Surgery at Sea PDF Author: Matthew D. Tadlock
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031218930
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 750

Book Description
Currently, no comprehensive practical surgical textbook or other reference exists for the management of injured and other surgical patients at sea. This text focuses on the increasingly important field of medical and surgical management of patients in the modern expeditionary maritime environment. The editors and contributors to this new handbook are a group of physicians, nurses, and corpsmen with extensive experience in caring for patients in the expeditionary maritime environment, designing and implementing current doctrine and policy, and publishing peer-reviewed articles focused on these topics. This handbook takes the approach of a "how to" manual for the management of combat or disaster victims, beginning at the point of injury and proceeding through each stage of care until they leave the maritime environment. This includes sections on prehospital care, triage, en-route care, and maritime mass casualty management, as well as additional chapters covering unique aspects of maritime platforms, capabilities, and missions. The bulk of the book focuses on the initial patient evaluation and resuscitation as well as the operative and perioperative phases of care including prolonged casualty care. The primary focus throughout the book is on simple, practical, and proven practices that can be easily understood and implemented by physicians and independent providers of any experience level who may find themselves in similar situations. For the clinical chapters, each begins with a clinical vignette relevant to the chapter based on actual patients or maritime scenarios experienced by the authors demonstrating the various challenges that can occur caring for injured and surgical patients at sea while deployed on maritime and amphibious platforms. When appropriate, each clinical chapter will conclude by describing the recommended management and outcome of the patient(s) presented in the vignette that opened the chapter. The style is plain and direct language, avoiding scientific jargon and unnecessary complexity whenever possible. Each chapter begins with 5 to 10 bullet points that summarize the key information or “BLUF” (bottom line up front) from that chapter and conclude with common tips and pitfalls, as well as recommended high-yield resources for the entire maritime surgical team.

Book Description
This book acts as a guide for people who are filled with doubt and who constantly experience internal conflict in their life, for people who are uncertain about who they really are and who they would like to become. It aims to help readers ask themselves essential questions about their past, their sense of identity, and their future goals and aspirations. In short, it aims to help readers find purpose in life and take action in order to fulfill that newfound purpose. From the outset, the author insists that, as individuals, we should strive to transform our consciousnessthat is, the way we perceive the world. In order to do this, it is essential that we first switch our operating system (OS). Our operating system is a state of consciousness; it is our capacity to interpret eventsthe mental software, so to speak, through which we process every one of our experiences of the world. The following informal conversations offer us a practical approach to switching our operating system. They show us how to better understand our emotions, how to cope with them, and how to turn vulnerability into an advantage. Ultimately, they show us that it is indeed possible to live a life based on self-respect, self-approval, and self-discipline, one in which we can take effective action to both change our circumstancesour family, our friends, our relationships, our workand the way we perceive them.
