Book Description
Ten years ago, Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Channel premiered to millions of cable subscribers across America. Murdoch's grand experiment was operating on little more than faith and an unswerving conviction that it could fill a niche CNN and the big three networks either could not or would not satisfy. We know the rest of the story. Since its relatively modest premiere, Fox has become a true force. By most ratings measures, in fact, Murdoch's network has surpassed Ted Turner's CNN. Of course, this would all make for an inspiring Cinderella story if the character living happily ever after wasn't the ugly stepsister. Fox presents itself, without perceptible irony, as a trusted news source. Its familiar slogans "Fair and Balanced" and "We Report, You Decide" suggest an informed, skeptical viewership. But Fox's viewers are, empirically speaking, less informed than other, comparable news consumers-and there's some evidence that it's Fox itself that's made them that way. Fair and Balanced, My Ass is a wide-ranging, irreverent, and humorous look at America's No. 1 cable news network. In addition to examining Fox's phony patriotism and piety, its dishonest crusades, and its well-defined agenda- and ratings-driven techniques, the book delivers a hearty slap-down to the jewels in the Murdoch crown, including Bill O'Reilly, John Gibson, Hannity and Colmes, Neal Cavuto, Fox & Friends, Brit Hume, et al. The result is a hilarious and bracing read: red meat for liberals and food for thought for anyone who is both amused by and concerned about journalism's continually eroding standards.

Lies

Lies PDF Author: Al Franken
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101219440
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 449

Book Description
The #1 New York Times bestseller by Senator Al Franken, author of Giant of the Senate Al Franken, one of our “savviest satirists” (People), has been studying the rhetoric of the Right. He has listened to their cries of “slander,” “bias,” and even “treason.” He has examined the GOP's policies of squandering our surplus, ravaging the environment, and alienating the rest of the world. He’s even watched Fox News. A lot. And, in this fair and balanced report, Al bravely and candidly exposes them all for what they are: liars. Lying, lying liars. Al destroys the liberal media bias myth by doing what his targets seem incapable of: getting his facts straight. Using the Right’s own words against them, he takes on the pundits, the politicians, and the issues, in the most talked about book of the year. Timely, provocative, unfailingly honest, and always funny, Lies sticks it to the most right-wing administration in memory, and to the right-wing media hacks who do its bidding.

The Dream Revisited

The Dream Revisited PDF Author: Ingrid Ellen
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231545045
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 643

Book Description
A half century after the Fair Housing Act, despite ongoing transformations of the geography of privilege and poverty, residential segregation by race and income continues to shape urban and suburban neighborhoods in the United States. Why do people live where they do? What explains segregation’s persistence? And why is addressing segregation so complicated? The Dream Revisited brings together a range of expert viewpoints on the causes and consequences of the nation’s separate and unequal living patterns. Leading scholars and practitioners, including civil rights advocates, affordable housing developers, elected officials, and fair housing lawyers, discuss the nature of and policy responses to residential segregation. Essays scrutinize the factors that sustain segregation, including persistent barriers to mobility and complex neighborhood preferences, and its consequences from health to home finance and from policing to politics. They debate how actively and in what ways the government should intervene in housing markets to foster integration. The book features timely analyses of issues such as school integration, mixed income housing, and responses to gentrification from a diversity of viewpoints. A probing examination of a deeply rooted problem, The Dream Revisited offers pressing insights into the changing face of urban inequality.

The Fair Balance

The Fair Balance PDF Author: Ioannis Sarmas
Publisher: Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft
ISBN: 9783848718252
Category : Justice
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book presents the means and the process by which fair balance solutions are shaped. Readers will find in it no recommendations to policy makers on social arrangements to be established, or proposals for solutions to social conflicts. Normative theories of justice, such as egalitarianism, utilitarianism or contractarianism, will be addressed, but not for promoting the ideas of justice which are advocated by them. They will be treated as material to be analysed for a better understanding of justice. Justice in this book is regarded as an observable phenomenon consisting of the satisfaction provided to individuals involved in a social interaction when they are having regard to the treatment of the others' interests. This conviction can be effective when it actually occurs, or hypothetical, when the individual in a position to judge considers that the treatment received by the interests in interaction may be regarded as being the best possible. It is about justice conceived in this way that the author intends, in this book, to procure a study that is simultaneously descriptive and operational: descriptive in the sense of covering the whole phenomenon and built on accurate and verifiable knowledge; and operational, in the sense of establishing the laws that govern the phenomenon, thus providing a sound basis for predicting the circumstances that may generate it.

Do Exclusionary Rules Ensure a Fair Trial?

Do Exclusionary Rules Ensure a Fair Trial? PDF Author: Sabine Gless
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030125203
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
This open access publication discusses exclusionary rules in different criminal justice systems. It is based on the findings of a research project in comparative law with a focus on the question of whether or not a fair trial can be secured through evidence exclusion. Part I explains the legal framework in which exclusionary rules function in six legal systems: Germany, Switzerland, People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the United States. Part II is dedicated to selected issues identified as crucial for the assessment of exclusionary rules. These chapters highlight the delicate balance of interests required in the exclusion of potentially relevant information from a criminal trial and discusses possible approaches to alleviate the legal hurdles involved.
